Activity 5 focus on domain 5: Assessment and reporting. Assessment is an inevitable part of the teaching-learning processes. It determines the effectiveness of the curriculum at the same time it assesses/evaluates the learner’s performance. There are different assessment tools that can be utilized throughout the process where feed backs are drawn. In this activity the FS students will be engaged in varied opportunities which will help them understand better the assessment process.
1. Which of the above listed assessments are formative in nature? Justify your answer.
The term "assessment" refers to a broad range of techniques used by teachers to assess student understanding, learning requirements, and academic achievement as they occur throughout a lesson, unit, or course. In order to make adjustments to lessons, instructional strategies, and academic support, assessments help teachers identify concepts that students are having trouble understanding, skills they are having trouble picking up, or learning requirements they have not yet attained.
We would say all assessment tools under assessment for learning are referred to as formative because they monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback to learners. It is also a tool used by teachers to assess students' learning formative in nature since it may be done naturally before and during discussions. It is a teaching method that offers feedback that students may utilize to enhance their performance. From a teacher's standpoint, this may be as simple as watching class discussions, asking questions, and assessing students' work in progress. Assessment for learning is important because it helps us determine the pupils’ strengths and weaknesses.
2. List all the summative assessments that you have observed. Justify.
Summative assessments fall under assessment of learning because they are used by teachers to determine how much the students have learned after the lessons. This is also the recorded grade for learners. This is a summative assessment because it aims to evaluate student learning and academic achievement at the end of a term, year, or semester by comparing it against a universal standard or school benchmark. Summative assessments often have a high point value because they take place under controlled conditions and therefore have more visibility. At the end of a learning period, these assessments evaluate students' learning, knowledge, competency, or success. We all know that the purpose of summative assessment is to evaluate how much the students have learned throughout the period. Therefore, students will know their progress throughout the period. The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard.
What guidelines on test construction and art of questioning did the teacher consider in each assessment activity?
The teacher followed some test construction guidelines, such as ensuring that the learning objectives were met, as well as some factual recall and demonstration of knowledge. On the art of questioning, HOTS questions are used, which encourage learners to think critically, communicate their ideas, draw conclusions, make inferences, and assess the validity of their prior knowledge. Those are questions that usually begin with "what," "why," or "how," which allow the students to answer through their knowledge, opinion, or feelings.
Interview a teacher from the DepEd and/or the PSU-LIS, ask how they compute learners’ grades and what criteria do they caonsider, also ask how are the grades or performance reported to parents. Record the result of your interview here.
A grading system's objectives are to provide kids with feedback so they may take control of their learning and notify all those who assist these students. A reporting system's goal is to let employers, postsecondary institutions, and families know how well pupils are doing. Above all, these systems need to clearly convey information regarding the abilities a student has attained or the areas in which they require additional guidance or practice. Based on our interviews with our cooperating teachers, they said that in computing grades, there are components that need to be considered. These are the written works like quizzes and activities, performance tasks, and quarterly assessments. For instance, in the mother tongue subject, written works make up 40% of the grade and performance activities make up 60%. The grades are calculated for the students based on this percentage. They also stated that they are currently using the template provided by DepEd during the pandemic because the department does not provide a new one. Furthermore, every grading period there is a card day, which is when she tells the parents about the achievement of their children, explains it to them clearly, and makes sure that she has a record to show the parents if they have complaints about the grades
1. Why is there a need to evaluate learning?
The evaluation provides information to the instructor regarding the effectiveness of his or her instruction. The primary goal of an evaluation is to make a determination regarding the worth or quality of an educational program or the competence of a student's achievements. Evaluation and assessment are important to know what students learn, how well they are learning, and where they can improve. Evaluation and assessment are crucial because they help us determine whether or not our learners truly understand the lesson we are teaching. As a result, learning must be evaluated in order for us to ascertain its efficacy and whether the performance and learning objectives were fulfilled. It can also be used to help you as a teacher determine whether a curriculum or instructional style is being used in accordance with the plan.
2. Do teachers need to record results of formative and summative assessments? Why or why not?
Yes, teachers must document the findings of formative and summative evaluations based on the grades that students receive or provide for the entire grading process or discussion. Because of this, a student's performance in all disciplines is graded according to whether they passed or failed. And by keeping track of the results, the teachers will know which of their pupils need to improve academically and which ones are more encouraging in their class. Therefore, it's crucial to keep track of every outcome so that parents have documentation in the event that they ever have questions about their child's academic performance.
3. In the assessment that was administered, do you think the teacher prepared a table specification. Elucidate your answer.
Yes, the teacher created a table of specifications or requirements to evaluate the pupils' understanding of the material she covered and to make sure they learned it. The focus of the assessment she presented to his or her students was the subject she addressed. This will let the teacher assess how much the pupils have learned.
4. How did the teacher align the task in the assessment tools with the intended learning outcomes?
The teacher will come up with a challenge that engaged the pupils while also teaching them something. She spoke about the many forms of social media and how to use them, so that makes sense. When a student actively engages and the teacher invites that student to express his or her opinions on what is being discussed, the students successfully complete the topic's intended learning objectives.
5. Did the teacher used a scoring rubric to evaluate the students’ performance? Describe how it was utilized.
The scoring rubrics are indeed used by the teacher to assess the students' performance. One of the assessment components includes performance tasks, so in order for the students to perform well, the teacher will either use or provide a scoring rubric to evaluate the students' performance. Most scoring rubrics are divided into three categories: criteria, levels of performance, and remarks or descriptors. Criteria are one or more qualities or dimensions that were used to evaluate students' responses. The scale of values used to rate each dimension is known as the level of performance. Finally, descriptors describe what is expected of students at each level of performance for each criterion.
6. Did the learners encounter difficulty in answering the teacher’s questions? Expound your answer.
We've seen that the students can respond to the teacher's inquiry. There is no trouble with the question because it is clear and has adequate guidelines.
7. Did the teacher encounter challenge(s) during the computation and reporting of grades to parents? Justify your answer.
According to the teacher, there were no difficulties because computing learners grades is through Interim policy guidelines for assessment and grading in light of the basic education learning continuity plan." When determining grades, they take into account the criteria by computing the written work and performance task evaluation components. When giving parents their children's grades, teachers explain how they are calculated so that the parents are aware of the standards and procedures used to determine their children's grades.
