Activity 3- PPST Domain 3: Diversity of Learners provides the opportunity to understand learners how differences in gender, racial, cultural, and religious background affects the interaction in school, learn about the practices and strategies that teachers use in dealing with diversity in classroom.
Write your Narrative Report on Domain 3 Diversity of Learners Discussion/Lecture
"The domain of diversity of learners emphasizes the idea that teachers can facilitate the learning process for diverse types of learners by first recognizing and respecting individual differences, then using the knowledge about students’ differences to design diverse sets of learning activities to ensure that all students can attain appropriate learning rules.”
We have pupils who vary from other students in terms of performance level, rate of learning, and learning styles all around the world. Additionally, there are pupils who differ in terms of gender, home language, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and culture. Some learners are gifted or talented in one or more areas, whereas others have impairments. Learner diversity or student diversity are terms frequently used to describe these kids in these circumstances. Learner diversity is the term used to describe the group and individual variances among our students. This phenomenon can have a significant impact on learning because it occurs in every classroom. We learned from observing a class that teachers value learning as much as possible about the student's background and developing a student profile that they know will provide a better understanding of the child's abilities, learning preferences, and a greater comprehension of the distinct interests, personalities, and skills of their students' familiarity and competence. Teachers will consider the differences because becoming acquainted with the students is beneficial. Developing various learning activities for individuals while taking into account their backgrounds, experiences, and capacities Learners have differences, but they are unique.
All in all, each learner has a range of skills, strengths, and weaknesses. In our increasingly diverse and multicultural society, it’s more important than ever for teachers to incorporate inclusion, and the increase in diversity doesn’t only relate to race and ethnicity; it can also include students of different religions, economic statuses, sexual orientations, gender identity, and language backgrounds.
Read the following carefully before you begin to observe a class. Write your observation report on the space provided.
1. How much interaction is there in the classroom? Describe how the students interact with one another and with the teacher. Are there groups that interact more with the teacher than others?
In our observation, as we can saw to the children in the school, we observe the sense of oneness and unity among the learners because we can see their eagerness to strive hard, so that they can learn the certain topic and also the unity among the teacher and the learners because unity implies uniformity and harmony aside from that the class we observed portray that characteristics.
2. Observe the learner’s behavior during the conduct of the class. How do they behave and interact differently?
Face to face class now is different before because we experience pandemic, and it is not easy to catch up again especially to those students have no much learning during the pandemic. In terms of behavior during their class, some are very active, some are not attentive, some are very quiet, and some are in average level. Additionally, we saw that while some learners participate in class and talk to their peers, others do not, but the teacher has a strategy for getting those learners to speak by asking them to repeat. Additionally, when the teacher asks a question, learners who already know the answer raise their hands. However, on rare occasions, they will also speak the answer aloud, which can be disruptive in class. However, when the teacher follows up by asking, "What will you do when you know the answer," the learners respond appropriately. Since every one of our learners will behave differently, it is important for teachers to have a plan in place for how to handle this.
3. Describe the relationship among the learners. Do the learners cooperate with or compete against each other?
Based on what we observed, the relationship among the learners are good, they are friendly to each other, when one of their classmates don’t have any food when recess comes, they share their foods without hesitation, as well as their things, if one does not have a pencil or crayon, they lend to each other. Learners cooperate with each other sometimes when they had an activity, they help each other, but sometimes they compete against each other when their teacher ask a question about their lesson.
4. Who among the students participated actively? Who among them asked most for help?
According on what we observed, only a few of them simply sit silently in their chairs, but even those interact with their peers and reply when their teacher asks questions. The majority of them actively participate in class.
5. When a learner is called and cannot answer the teacher’s question, do the classmates try to help him? Or do they raise hand, so that the teacher will call them instead?
They do both, their classmates try to help and at the same time they raise their hand to call so that their teacher can call them to answer in front. By doing that, they express or shares their thoughts, ideas and reactions. Also, actively participate towards the topic that has been tackled.
1. Identify the person who play the key roles in the relationships and interactions in a virtual classroom. What roles do they play? Is there somebody who appears to be the leader, a mascot/joker, an attention seeker, a little teacher, a doubter/ pessimist?
What we saw indicates that the bulk of relationships and interactions in the classroom are facilitated by the teacher. In order to fulfill her role as the cornerstone or backbone of her class, the teacher must devise strategies to teach her students how to respect one another and herself. By doing this, the students are able to form enduring bonds with one another. Aside from that, some pupils are attention-seekers; they make an effort to get the attention of their teacher and fellow students. There are some students who stand out as the leaders and the teachers; they are the ones who instruct their peers who are less knowledgeable about the subject. In the classroom, the teacher and the pupils both make jokes. The instructor cracks jokes to liven up the atmosphere.
2. How does the teacher influence the class interaction considering the individual differences of the students in a classroom?
The teacher can influence how the class interacts while taking into account the individual diversity of the learners by upholding a sense of justice among them. You should know how to be fair in the classroom and foster a sense of equality among your learners if you want to succeed as a teacher. For instance, you should contact all learners rather than simply those that are higher on your ranking list when you have an activity, or you should pay special attention to the learners who need it so they don't feel different.
1. How did you feel as you observed in the classroom? Did you feel a sense of oneness or unity among the learners, and between the teacher and the learners?
Yes, learners work as one or they had a unity. Despite the fact that some students don't engage with their peers too much, they interact and seem to be a family in the classroom. You can see that the teacher and the pupils are actually one—that they are a family—by showing respect, being helpful, and having great communication and relationships with one another. We felt happy and amazed because we saw a new strategy from the teacher that we can also use in the field of teaching.
2. In the future, how would you want the learners in your classroom to interact? How will you, make it happen?
First of all, we will know our learners, their names, backgrounds and experiences. We will also determine their strength, weaknesses, their skills and knowledge. We will create a welcoming learning environment to feel that they are comfortable and important and lastly we will encourage our learners to interact positively with one another. We want our learners to treat their teacher and their classmates with respect and to feel that everyone in the classroom is a member of a unified family. We want each of us to be genuine and enthusiastic in whatever circumstance that may arise.
Activity3- PPST Domain 3: Diversity of Learners provides the opportunity to observe learners of different ages and grade levels virtually. It highlights the differences in their characteristics and needs. As a future educator, it is important to determine learners’ characteristics and needs so that you will be able the implement learning activities and assessment that are all developmentally appropriate.
Directions: Complete the table below. Indicate opposite each learning principle the part of the lesson where it/they are employed/utilized.
Write the most salient developmental characteristics of the learners you observed. Based on the characteristics, think of implications for teachers.
1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall your experiences when you were at their age? What similarities or differences do you have with the learners you observed?
As we observed, we see ourselves way back when we at elementary level. We can say that the students we observed are responsive. It is important to communicate with your teachers to create a significant communication. The similarities between us and the learners that we observed was the willingness to learn something and to catch up some new information. People learn new things when they try new things and are exposed to new material. Although some individuals are unaware of it, we all learn something new every day. Learning is a long-term change in behavior or knowledge that occurs as a result of experience. To meet the demands.
2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons. How did she/he or not help you with your needs (physical, emotional, social, and cognitive)? How did it affect you?
They are both a science teacher, in positive reason, when I was in grade 8 she is my favorite because she is very jolly and you will learn a lot about everything. She is not boring to teach; she doesn’t also embarrass a student. And for my negative reason, I don’t want to say the time when I was experienced this but she is my worst science teacher that I ever had, she make me feel sad when we had our discussion to her, and she called my name and I am aware of myself that I am not yet ready and I felt so embarrassed that time, because she said something else that my heart and mind did not accept, so that for now I had a trauma, I don't want to talk anymore and say my ideas because I'm ashamed, but for now I will do my best to face my fears.
3. Share your other insights here.
It is very typical for elementary pupils to be curious, to ask questions out of the blue, to like moving around, and to fantasize about playing all of the time. The elementary learners keep on asking question.
