Why do we set homework?
To encourage students to learn how to study well by themselves and with the support of their parents.
To consolidate, reinforce and extend skills and understanding
So students can finish coursework and prepare well for examinations.
To promote the highest standards of learning and achievement.
What should students expect?
All students are expected to receive and complete homework, with tasks relevant to their ability and to schemes of work.
Homework tasks should be spread out over a week, on average taking
between 2½ and 7½ hours in Years 7 and 8
between 5 and 10 hours in Year 9
between 7½ and 12½ hours in Years 10 and 11
Wherever possible homework tasks should be available via ICT, placed on ClassCharts and set well in advance with realistic hand-in dates.

What should be done for homework?
Subject teachers will explain tasks clearly and set deadlines.
Students should record what to do in their planner.
Students should clearly label homework, complete promptly and hand in on time.
Tasks will vary, relate to work done in lessons, ability of students and might include; reading, writing stories, poetry, reports, essays, drawing, learning by heart, e.g. spellings, vocabulary, key facts, designing collecting information, making models, calculating, projects, visiting the library, simple investigations, interviewing, recording, speaking, making posters, revising for exams, ICT work, making models, SAM Learning exercises.
What support is needed?
Subject teachers will provide resources and extra help for those that need it.
Students should ask for help if they have a problem with homework.
Students can look to do homework in the library, ICT, Learning Support rooms or other classrooms at lunchtime or after College. They may attend a homework club, use libraries or other centres in the community.
Parents can help to motivate their children and monitor the work being done.
Subject teachers will mark work and feedback to students, record and report. They will reward good work and effort.
Subject teachers will give sanctions when work is not done sufficiently well.
Directors of Learning will check the quality of homework and liaise with Learning Co-ordinators and parents to ensure that standards are met.
