Diceva J.J.

(- The only way for us to become great, or even inimitable if possible, is to imitate the Greeks -.)
After all, the history of art is the history of reference models, in any case to be dismantled, with which each new generation of artists has confronted itself positively and/or negatively, in terms of acceptance, sharing, starting point or transit and/or protest, rejection, overcoming, dismemberment.
The philosophy of Pop-Art in full consumerist coherence had been to make art a mass phenomenon, capable of speaking to most people, up to the trivialization of the model. But it was not a political operation of democratization of art, but rather a commercial operation of displaying a fashion and in any case exclusive product on the shelves of the luxury market.
Appropriation Art has remained a culturally wise phenomenon, certainly refined and glossy, but above all intellectualistic and elitist, because - unlike all its predecessors - it is manifest, declared, pursued and boasted.
Few of my photographs are “tableau (more or less) vivant”, recompositions of famous works. They are, in fact, snapshots – not necessarily polished, but more often than not spontaneous and improvised – which I have been taking since 2013.
Most are surrealist associations between real-life images and images deposited in my visual memory after 40 years of teaching art history in high schools (associations or rather ready-made, "Il vous choisit, pour ainsi dire" - Marcel Duchamp). This sort of automatic process, in my use of black and white, led me, from 2023 onwards, to link my photographs (and just for fun too) to the entries for the catalogued works of art catalogued in the Federico Zeri Foundation’s photographic archive – a catalogue which is referred to here as the Omeri Foundation Photo Library.
In any case, the result is always a trivialization of the historical work of art, but of the pop operation I prefer the new-dada attitude inherent in his artistic making, i.e. the game with the practice of the ready-made. After all, my photographs are, to all intents and purposes, ready-mades. The conceptual approach is not lacking either, even if I tend to deny the deliberate and premeditated aspects bred into the conceptual art.
In the "mare magnum" of the network my photos want to blend in both with the certified images often covered by the copyright of the collections, and with the fake-reproductions of authentic works, thus questioning the nature itself and the value of the digital image and/or its processing using AI to download from Internet. The operation is implicitly infinite, almost how the artists and their artworks.
The project, however, aims to give back to photography its nature of a physical object, and therefore of a consumer product, to be promoted on social media, digitally downloaded for free from the web and printed in the desired size on a media of your choice: paper, canvas, aluminum, etc.
The only optional to be negotiated is the certified, numbered and guaranteed signature of the author, signature which - upon request - can thus complete the operation, in line with the principle of attributing both artistic value to the ready-made and economic value to the pop art multiple.
But the game becomes topical when the iconology of the same cited work is interpreted today. If only because it was re-proposed today. Here then is the new title of some historicized images that face up to contemporaneity. Thus the caption becomes an integral part of the work.
For exhibitions and marketing purposes, a specific format is set out below, which also includes the use of captions.
