Historic Renovation/Restoration

Blue Sound Construction

The clients wanted to maintain the history and elegance of their 1904 Dutch Colonial home while bringing their colorful personal taste to the project.

Blue Sound Construction added an historically sensitive addition and roof deck to the house, while keeping the profile low from the street—a priority for the clients, who wanted to maintain their large front yard. They then renovated the entire house, adding a mother-in-Law apartment at the back, a new dining room and entry at the front, and a welcoming porch between the garden and the home.

Custom stained-glass panels at the front porch entry and dining room add a handmade feel to the new spaces.  They paid careful attention to the new cherry bright work while adding colorful touches like a custom kitchen tile backsplash and cobalt blue range. The pass-through between the kitchen and dining room references historical details from the home, while updating the flow of the space. Even the bathrooms have colorful details that fit with the clients' playful taste.

The living room incorporates a large cherry built-in, and an updated fireplace that lends some weight to the room. Upstairs, a new office off the main bedroom has skylights and a door to the deck, where the clients watch the sunset over their neighborhood then descend back to the second floor on an exterior staircase that is incorporated into both the second floor and roof plans with minimal impact.

While the team encountered some challenges, they worked together to keep the project on track.  The best part of the project are comments from the occupants, a content mother-in-law who says the house feels like a "resort" and happy neighbors who enjoy this subtle and historically sensitive addition.
