Sockeye Construction Corporation
An awkward load-bearing wall sat in the center of the main floor of this home. This made for an uninviting entrance to the home for guests who immediately looked at a coat closet and a set of stairs upon entering the home. The wall also compartmentalized the kitchen from the rest of the space.
Sockeye Construction Corporation adjusted the rafter roof framing and installed glu-lam beams to carry the point loads so they could remove the obtrusive wall and create a true open concept great room floorplan.
Then they eliminated one of two existing sliding glass doors to make room for the new built-in refrigerator and pantry. They replaced the existing small cook-top and microwave-hood vent with a 48” professional grade range with a true ceiling mounted hood vent. They walled in the existing fireplace and located a new gas fireplace in the newly configured living room that is visible from the kitchen so the chef may watch TV while preparing meals or entertaining.
The team replaced the old sliding glass door with an oversized set of French doors providing access from the great room to the back deck. Then they replaced the original outdated stair railing next to the entryway with additional cabinet storage that serves as both a display area and a way to separate the stairs from the adjacent areas. The geometric dining room chandelier and the modern wall-treatment on the fireplace wall add a whimsical touch.
The new oversized island is the perfect place to prep meals, enjoy a casual snack or host a party. And the reconfiguration of the excessively large living room allowed Sockeye to add a guest bathroom as well as a mudroom. A massive transformation was possible and all it took was removing a load bearing wall!
