A cigarette (French “small cigar”) is a small roll of finely cut tobacco leaves wrapped in a cylinder of thin paper for smoking. Nicotine is one of the most frequently used addictive drugs and the leading preventable cause of disease and disability and death in India. Cigarettes and tobacco in any form are illegal substance in most countries.
It affects various organs in human beings and causes diseases. Let us learn about them.
Heart – Heart attack
First we will see how the heart gets affected and lead to heart attack. Cigarette contains many toxic substances like nicotine, carbon, etc. When inhaled, due to these toxic substance get deposited on the inner walls of the blood vessels that carry blood to the heart. As a result a plaque is formed. So that it causes narrowing of the blood vessels. Hence blood supply to the walls of the heart is gradually reduced. Blood carries oxygen to the heart. Therefore, oxygen supply is also reduced. That’s why, there is no sufficient blood and oxygen supply to heart, thus it damages the heart muscle. Consequently, it leads to heart attack.
Lungs - Lung Cancer
The next organ is Lungs. Due to smoking, the small hairs (cilia) present in the upper respiratory tract (trachea) are destroyed. Because of this, germs, dust, smoke and other harmful chemicals enter the lungs and consequently it causes infection, cough and lung cancer. As a result, the air sacs of lungs (alveoli) get permanently damaged causing difficulty in breathing.
Digestive System – Chron’s disease, stomach disease
The consequence of smoking leads to heart burn, delays the healing of peptic ulcer, increases risk of Crohn’s diseases and formation of gall stones. The implication of smoking affects the liver and increases the chances of stomach cancer.
Legs – Chronic pain
Smoking affects the blood vessels of the legs. So that it causes chronic pain in legs.
This is how smoking affects the various organs in human being. But some people are addicted to this. In order to create awareness about the adverse effects of smoking, we learn this lesson. Now I’ll ask you a few questions.
