Works with Dr Aoife O'Higgins on an interdisciplinary knowledge exchange project funded by TORCH, to encourage better engagement between research and practice about experiences of care. The project proposes to stimulate conversations about care by bringing together key stakeholders – young people, social workers, foster carers and others – and researchers. Their conversations will take place on twitter, over coffee and cake, and through creative workshops. Their aim is to co-create knowledge with the care community and generate new ways of working together. Ultimately, they hope to suggest strategies for more engaged research.
Rosie Canning is also a Doctoral Researcher at University of Southampton. The focus of their research is the representations of orphans and care leavers in fiction. They are examining the research through the lens of both creative and critical practice.

While investigation on family estrangement is growing within the academic circles (Agllias 2015, 2016; Blake 2017; Authors), research regarding the interconnection between experiences of estrangement and higher education is still very limited. Existing literature is largely in the form of policy briefings and recommendations, in particular in relation to funding from UK bodies such as the Student Loans Company (SLC) and the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) (StandAlone 2015).
Here, we report on a qualitative study on the experiences of higher education students who are estranged from their family, investigating how estranged students develop a sense of identity in the context of their academic lives.

Family is widely regarded as a cornerstone of student support. When family support exist as an essential form of social capital making, rupture of family ties places students in a disadvantageous position. This paper focuses on estranged students’ accounts of their experiences of higher education, highlighting how capital dynamics shape their academic trajectories.
Based on interviews with 21 estranged students, our research uncovers different dimensions of estranged students’ struggles and successes as they move through academia. This paper explores the social imagination that surrounds the university student, or ‘student experience’, as resting upon family support.
The authors propose that widening participation policies and practices need to be more attuned to the realities that mark estranged students’ experiences, as they are not only impacted by the scarcity of either economic or social capital, but also by the instability of interrelated capitals that contribute to precarious and volatile experiences.

The ‘Estranged Students’ project aims to understand the challenges faced by estranged students. Funded by the Carnegie Trust and the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE), work is already informing policy, to ensure these students feel as ‘at home’ and connected as their classmates.

Who cares about Research? was founded in March 2020 by Sophia Alexandra Hall. As both a care leaver, and a University of Oxford graduate, Sophia has spoken at multiple conferences and events as a lived experience voice, and it was attending an academic conference that sparked the idea behind the podcast.
The podcast aims to share the world of cutting edge social research with those who it most affects. Every Wednesday from the 30th September, Sophia and Eva Sophia will be speaking to leading researchers in their fields about what’s next in the world of social science and why we should care about this research.
