See 44 for what I think is the right Druid list at this time. For now I want to learn about whether Oko is good. So I want to draw it a lot. This is the most Fokosed Oko list I could come up with that is still all-in-druid. Let's see how it goes.
3-2 (6-5); Oko is ... uncomfortably good. Everything that people said against Stoneforge (It really messes up the fair decks; it is good against burn) seems like it is actually true about Oko. This league was kind of a meme but I may have to investigate further.
The mana is NOT good though. The manabase is a serious challenge and we need to figure out the right answer before continuing; almost certainly the Lightcaster doesn't make the cut anymore. And we may need to play 2 Birds or something.
OO Prowess T3, T10 Lifetime 3-2 vs Prowess
XX Burn Lifetime 13-12 vs Burn
OO Grixis Control T4, T6 Lifetime 1-2 vs Grixis Control
OXO Grixis Shadow T3, T7 Lifetime 2-11 vs Shadow
XX Traverse Shadow Lifetime 2-12 vs Shadow
Okay Oko; this is your time to shine.
This is a keep. Once Upon a Time is just land 2 here.
T1 Noble, T2 Druid holding up Vines. Snag that Bolt, win T3. PLAY VINES you crazy people who aren't playing it.
Oko is pretty strong here. +1 Oko +2 Path +1 Forgetender +1 Firewalker
-2 Vizier -1 Birds -2 Noble (Lava Dart)
This looks sketch. Once Upon a Time is great though. I'll try it.
Once Upon a Time is a Druid, which gets a bolt. I play T3 Oko at 14 life facing down a Swiftspear, and make a Food.
Oko takes a Firebolt and a swiftspear hit so it already gained 4, not even counting the food.
Next turn I animate the Food and play a Forgetender; the Food gets bolted.
I'd say Oko did okay here.
Oko plused 8 times this game; most of the food got eaten but two of them got animated. Once they starting getting Gavony Township counters the opponent seemed a little unnerved, and we technically won with a Lunge turn 10, but like.. Oko and Forgetender and Shalai is way too much of a nightmare for the poor prowess deck.
Another Oko A+ matchup? Okay...
Noo
Hmm. I don't actually think this is very good, but I'm keeping it. Bottom a Finale.
The Once Upon a Time is a Shalai. Opponent has T2 Eidolon, and I have T2 second Noble. I could have gone T2 Finale for Giver, which would have been better but then I would have been less likely to hit my Shalai on time. Hmm.
I put my opponent on Boros Charm here.
Would you block? I blocked the Eidolon and they just traded Shalai for Bolt + Boros Charm (Indestructible). I believe this means I would have been okay if I did not block; they would double strike putting me to 8. I would Finale (X=1) going to 6 for Giver... chump with Noble, going to 4-ish life.
Anyway I died T6. Eidolon was too much.
+1 Forgetender +1 Firewalker +2 Path +1 Oko +1 Caterpillar (Eidolon)
-2 Vizier (Long Game) -2 Lunge (Life Total) -1 Call -1 Once (Eidolon)
Nope:
Hmm. The Once Upon a Time will have to be a second land, and then we will play what, T2 Vizier and hope it trades? I guess so:
Once Upon a Time is Razorverge Thicket, and I fetch tapped Breeding Pool on 1. Instead of running the Vizier out, I went with playing out a Noble on 2. Opponent didn't Rift Bolt it, and didn't Skewer it either. I played Oko T3 at 10 life, and made a Food. T4 Shalai, which gets a Path. I punt by not cracking every single food I make, and die T6.
The key turn is when I don't have the mana to crack the food because of playing Shalai, I animate it instead. Don't do that. Just make more.
I die with 4 mana open and 0 life exactly. Opponent never played a creature.
Veil of Summer and Thrun and now Oko basically invalidate this deck. We try to steal game 1 and then smash them in sideboarded games.
Yup
I do my best Infect impression T1 with Once Upon a Time and fetch Breeding Pool for Noble. It gets Drowned in the Loch.
Opponent lets me untap with Druid, but I am not buying it. I wait to Call on their end step so I have a couple shots at it.
What is the play here?
Vines on Druid is just fine here. With the Lunge, this allows us to beat not just this Bolt but also any one other interaction spell.
Opponent needed 3 interaction spells on T4, and had only 1. Not close.
Win T4.
-2 Vizier -2 Once -1 Bird +1 Oko (Very Long Game) +4 Veil +1 Thrun (Blue/Black) -1 Giver (Sweepers)
Wow
T1 Noble gets Brutalitied with no Escalate. T2 Druid gets Drowned.
T3 Oko. Hahahahahaha
Okay this shit is unreal
Opponent spent all their spells countering and killing my Druids to not die, and in the meantime they are expected to also beat this nonsensical stream of Elks coming from basically another player who starts at 10 life. This is a bit much for them to answer.
Shadow is a serious problem. We put 1 mana creatures and 1 mana protection spells in front of our combo, and our opponent happily trades 1 mana for all of them until we die to a 1 mana creature. I have learned that apparently Shadow sometimes "loses to itself" and that is what you are supposed to play toward, so here we go.
Yup!
Opponent Thoughtseizes our Druid, we win T3. They needed 2 hand disruption spells or a hand disruption and 2 removals by their T2.
-2 Vizier -2 Once -1 Finale -1 Bird
+4 Veil +1 Oko +1 Lightcaster What? Why don't I have paths? Oops, forgot.
Sure!
Once Upon a Time could be a second Noble, but I get a third land.
T1 Noble gets Dismembered, T2 Druid gets Brutalitied. T3 Giver gets Pushed. Dead.
-1 Vizier -1 Finale for +2 Path
Toss a 5-land 7, then keep this and bottom the Misty:
T1 Giver, T2 Giver. Lose the Call to Thoughtseize. Lose the Giver to Dismember, T3 Shadow is here.
Noble Hierarch and Giver of Runes are somehow stronger than all of these game actions. Win T7.
Apparently Traverse Shadow actually exists. Traverse Shadow is less efficient but also doesn't lose to itself as much (so Paths are less of a glaring problem for them). I believe this is the first time I've ever seen Traverse the Ulvenwald cast on MTGO.
This is close but I'll keep T4s on the play.
Lose Call to the Inquisition. T3 play Shalai with Giver up.
Opponent gets the Battlerage perfects and kills me T5.
Noo, this hand is unacceptable:
We keep this monstrosity instead: WHERE IS VEIL OF SUMMER?
Both Okos go away to Thoughtseizes and we don't draw any Veils or anything else relevant ever.
Die eventually.
Played against three 4x Veil matchups today and drew zero Veils despite mulliganing to them pretty aggressively. Feels pretty bad.
Oko is scary good.
