4-1 (8-5). Felt great. Once Upon a Time continues to be a great consistency booster filling in for 2 mana sources and 2 spells, but it's still very difficult to play.
OXO Bant Stoneblade Company (T6, T7) (5-4 lifetime vs Stoneblade)
OO UR Thing Ascension (T4, T4) (Not tracked)
XX Elves (2-1 lifetime vs Elves)
OXO BW Eldrazi (T4, T6) (2-0 lifetime vs BW Eldrazi)
OXO Burn (T4, T5) (10-7 lifetime vs Burn)
Same as League 33.
The cards closest to being cut are Hushbringer, Chameleon Colossus, Dryad Arbor, 3rd Evolution.
The cards that just barely didn't make the cut are 3rd Path, 3rd Thrun, Ranger-Captain of Eos, and another Horizon Canopy.
Keep this 7; even if the Noble dies and we miss our land, Giver of Runes is a fine T2 play.
T1 Noble, T2 Double Giver to play around what looks like a 4x Path deck.
T3 Druid gets Quelled. Maybe I was supposed to jam into Paths. T4 Evolution my Noble into a Druid resolves.
T5 Vizier gets Quelled. It seems unlikely, but T6 Evolution wins. Nice!
This matchup is all about Spell Queller even though we just beat two, so board accordingly: -2 Lunge -3 Evolution +2 Path +1 Hushbringer +1 Thrun +1 Caterpillar
Yes; easy keep:
T2 Stoneforge Mystic vs T2 Druid should be a win for us, but it isn't. They path my Druid and I kill it in response. I spend T3 Calling to set up for a T4 Lunge attempt. They play T4 Deputy taking my Giver of Runes, and then there is another Path to stop my second try. I let that one happen, hoping I will get to make a win out of 4drops. Unfortunately the Thrun I drew is not doing much against the Ice-Fang holding a sword. Shalai would have been excellent.
-1 Thrun +1 Evolution
No:
I kept this 6, bottoming a Giver. I think this is maybe supposed to be a mulligan, but blanking all spot removal forever is kind of reasonable.
This matchup is awkward because you have to either jam the Druid T2 into a Path, or jam it T3 protected from Path but into a Queller. Here it's easier because we have a Lunge in hand; T2 the Druid and the guess was right; they have Queller but no Path.
Draw nothing for a long time though. They Coco on my end step T4 when I do nothing and critically only hit one thing.
Turn 5 they Deputy my two Druids, so I play T6 Druid going to 2 life and hope they can't counter an X spell. They can't, and I win T7.
Very close. I'm not sure Hushbringer is worth the slot; I'm never tutoring for it in this, its premier matchup, always tutoring for a combo piece. Will probably replace it with 3rd Path because that is also great when I draw it, but it's also live in other matchups and New Urza doesn't care about Hushbringer much either.
Yes, thank you Once Upon a Time. Remember that 4 Once Upon a Time replaced 2 lands and 2 spells, so it's great that it is a land for us here.
I wait for T2 to Once Upon a Time for more info; use it to hit third land because I don't feel like I need a Giver of Runes with this hand.
T2 Druid gets Bolted; T3 Druid + Giver survives and watches opponent play a Pyromancer Ascension; T4 win.
The real question is whether you assume they have Thing in the Ice (need Path to Exile then) without seeing it when they play an Ascension. I think so.
+1 Caterpillar +1 Forgetender +2 Path +2 Veil, -3 Evolution -1 Once -1 Vizier -1 Lunge
Sure; hands with 2 combo pieces and protection are pretty good.
T1 Noble; opponent casts Thing in the Ice T2! Yes! Boarded correctly! Except I don't actually have a Path in hand.
I play T2 Giver + Call for Druid; opponent flips Thing using a Noxious Revival. Yikes. I still play T3 Druid + Chumpblocking Giver and hope.
My hopes are answered; opponent spends some mana cantripping and developing an Ascension. Win T4 with unneeded Veil backup.
I've been keeping T4s even with minimal protection lately, even on the draw:
Opponent plays an Elf which is the worst thing to see when you keep a T4 win on the draw. Maybe I shouldn't be keeping those at all.
My T2 Once Upon a Time doesn't hit a Druid either. I play T3 Druid and pray. My prayers are not answered and I die T4, as I should.
+1 Hushbringer +2 Veil -1 Shalai -2 Lunge
No, this hand does nothing:
Keep this 6, bottoming Noble:
I have no payoff for the T3 win despite Once Upon a Time T2 and also cracking a Canopy.
Veil saves my life from their basically-T3 kill to give me another draw, but I don't hit it. Die T4.
If this Once Upon a Time was a Druid, the hand would be great. Because of Call in hand, it's also ok as Vizier or Shalai or Ballista, so keep. This is how I have been evaluating Once Upon a Time -- if it has huge upside but also is ok as other things, then it's excellent. Once Upon a Time + Call are very likely to find both pieces.
T1 Thoughtseize takes my free spell. T2 Inquisition takes my Call.
I draw another Call to play Druid T3 with Vines backup. Opponent kills it with Push + Path (I have a Lunge, so it dies of course).
Win T4 with Evolution for 2nd Shalai attacking with the Lunged Druid. Lol. Nice interactive deck.
+4 Veil +2 Path -2 Vizier -3 Evolution -1 Once
Hmm. No; this doesn't do anything. The 2/1 is barely a card and the Ballista is also barely a card.
Better:
Bottom Lunge. I lose my Call to an Inquisition and a Path to a Tidehollow Sculler, then I lose the Shalai to a Thoughtseize.
Losing Veil of Summer to a Thought-Knot Seer is the most tilting thing possible.
Wait no he takes the Lunge and later plays a Push so I have a chance.
Sword of Fire and Ice having some trouble finding a target on this board.
I eventually die to drawing nothing.
+1 Vizier -1 Ballista
Do you keep this vs the 16 discard deck? It can't win right? I don't know, make them have it.
The Once Upon a Time is a Druid, so I have a T3. But that is pretty unlikely to work.
Their curve of Push Sculler Nothing Smasher is not enough interaction. Win T5.
Yup, obviously:
T1 nothing, T2 Noble hold up Vines, T3 Druid hold up Vines. Win T4.
-2 Once Upon a Time, -2 Vizier, -1 Evolution, +2 Forgetender +2 Path +1 Caterpillar
Sure; 3 one drops mean even if I miss land 2, things will work out.
Opponent goes T1 Spike, T2 nothing. That's probably a Searing Blood, but I'm impressed that they didn't hit my Noble with it.
I go T2 Druid. It dies in response to a Helix. My Forgetender gets Pathed. Opponent has no creatures and all bolts.
-2 Lunge +1 Vizier +1 Once
Keep definitely -- Once Upon a Time is respectable here as either Druid or Noble.
The Once Upon a Time is a Noble.
Rift Bolt plus Searing Blaze on opponent's T3 messes up my T4 win.
We make the opponent have double bolt or we win, and they don't have it. Win T5.
4-1.
Will go -1 Hushbringer +1 Path.
