Dracovix (DRAY-co-vix) are a species of cryptid fox-like dragons that the rest of the world speak doubtfully of in only sightings, rumors, legends, and superstition. In truth, they avoid contact with intelligent races by hiding their societies away from high density civilization in the mountains bordering humanoid settlements or even less hospitable biomes further beyond. Dracovix seem to instinctively love the "game" of keeping themselves as a long held secret to the rest of the world, teasing explorers over the millennia of humanity with only hints of their existence.
Dracovix share their world with other large, fantastic, and powerful megafauna, and as a result are naturally shyer creatures, preferring to keep their activities private and hidden from plain view whenever possible. They like to allow themselves to be shrouded in mist or among the clouds in their mountainous territories. Many dracovix are aware of their reputation for hiding themselves from other intelligent beings, sometimes going as far as to find it amusing and fun when humanoids try and fail to find them in the wild.
Even when prompted to talk about themselves, dracovix prefer to keep their own lives to themselves and not involve humans with what, to them, is just private household living, but that doesn’t mean dracovix avoid human society entirely. Many will, in a long term quest for a more exciting life, to sate their curiosity, or to find some personal fulfillment, choose to master the art of shape-shifting in order to take on a humanoid form, referred to as their "Second Life," with which to immerse themselves among intelligent multi-racial societies and disguise their real identities. Dracovix living out a large portion of their lifespans in their Second Life form may be seeking emotional fulfillment by finding love, family, and belonging, intellectual fulfillment by learning a great deal of things such as science, academia, magic, or history, or virtuous fulfillment by helping people out or saving lives. In some parts of the world, intelligent races have come to accept the presence and friendship of dracovix, regarding them as a peculiar dragon-humanoid hybrid race of people whose origins are shrouded in mystery and kept as a closely guarded secret.
Dracovix may become highly committed to the lives and struggles of the people they befriend in the humanoid realm, but most will not lose the internal feeling that they will plan to go back home to their dracovixen society someday. In extremely rare situations, a dracovix may come to trust a non-dracovix so much that they reveal their true form to them. They will usually only trust someone in this way if they believe fully that this person won’t rat them to anyone who would bring harm to dracovix society. After this, it’s possible the dracovix may allow their friend to ride on their back into their next thrilling adventure.
It may seem like they live solitary lives, cohabitating in close proximity only to mate and raise young, but in reality, dracovix are always consciously aware of the other members in their community spanning several thousands of acres, seeing them as a neighbor no different from if they were living in each other’s back yards. Due to their ability to soar great distances at a relatively fast speed for their size, and their longer lifespans granting them the patience needed to travel long distances on a whim whenever they feel like it, physical distance as a concept is to them a much smaller thing. Dracovix will often take a day off to fly the whole length of a medium sized continent just to tell a friend dracovix some interesting news or to receive combat training from a specialized combat instructor for a day or two. Dracovix don’t keep track of weeks as a basis of time like humanoids do, instead planning their schedules around the moon phases. The idea of planning errands on a weekly basis like many people in human societies do would be crazy, stressful even, to them.
This world is a fantasy parallel universe to the real one, filled with magic and monsters from our imagination like a fantasy RPG. It's kind of like the Forgotten Realms setting mixed with that of Final Fantasy XIV, just a teensy bit more modern and loosely mapped over the real world.
The history of the starters, Virtuosa and her battalion of knights, takes place in a large, thriving dracovix kingdom located in a valley bordered and partitioned all throughout with tall mountains like that seen in China, but your dracovix can come from dracovixen settlements anywhere in the world, in any setting, especially areas where human population density is extremely low.
Dracovix = The name of the species. This word is the same when referring to an uncountable abstract number of Dracovix. (Eg. "Dracovix in general," "I've met a lot of dracovix actually").
Dracovixen = This is the plural form of the species name, when referring to a specific plural number of Dracovix. (Eg. "A dozen dracovixen")
"Dravix/Drave" = A few shorthand nicknames for the species name.
"Drvx/Dcvx" = Additional abbreviations for the species name.
Valley = The main subtype of Dracovix who thrive in mountainous terrain but can adapt to almost all kinds of biomes. There are rumors of other subtypes of Dracovix spotted in the far reaches of the world, but as of yet, they are only that - rumors.
Second Life = The humanoid form that some dracovix may master the ability to shapeshift into in order to infiltrate human society without revealing their true draconic identity. Every dracovix's Second Life form is unique, and dracovix will carefully practice their shapeshifting power until they perfect the ability to shapeshift into a Second Life form that they feel reflects who they are as a humanoid.
Kyeriugon = (Kyeh-ryoo-gone) This is the name of the dracovix race given to them by intelligent races and universally agreed upon by scholars of other intelligent races who have come to know many dracovix disguised in their Second Life form. Dracovix have also adopted this term to refer to their own race when immersing themselves in humanoid society.
Community = A Dracovix community is the average size of a group of cohabitating dracovix living sparsely over an area around the size of a mountain range, whose members all know each other and treat each other like members of a neighborhood.
Society = A more abstract term referring to a number of dracovix extending beyond a single community to include the cultures of and relations to additional Dracovix communities nearby which often share similar customs and attitudes.
Kingdom = The largest population and territory size that an affiliated Dracovix community can grow to, and may often include specific locations so secret to the rest of the world that Dracovix within the area live their lives out in the open, no longer hiding from plain view. Kingdoms are much more organized and sophisticated than regular communities, which are like quiet villages in comparison. Kingdoms can sometimes be formed when communities merge or absorb one another under a new leadership or usurpation, rapidly expanding in size, and cooperating more like one small "nation" of Dracovixen living in an area about the size of a country, and are usually led by one or more kings.
King = This is the gender neutral title given to the one or more dracovixen leaders of a Dracovix Kingdom. Dracovix kings are often strong, charismatic, and well liked individuals who guide and manage the societal systems of all the members of the kingdom. Kings are most often chosen democratically at the time a kingdom is founded on a basis of communal respect for the individual chosen for their proven abilities to lead the kingdom, but sometimes, kings can be chosen on an inheritance or power scaling basis. Due to the long lifespan of dracovix, meritocracies are the most stable system seen in dracovixen kingdoms, monarchies are the least prone to insurrection, and plutocracies, or power scaling based rule, are the least stable and most prone to insurrection due to the average individual's potential to spontaneously gain ambitions for glory and change with their own talents and efforts.
Dracovixen Settlement = An area of land where dracovix have made their territory.
Prince = Sometimes refers to a male or masc-identifying dracovix.
Queen = Sometimes refers to a female or femme-identifying dracovix.
(Nonbinary or agender dracovix will use either or neither term without regards to any gender stereotype associated.)Kit = Baby or young dracovix, younger than Juvenile, learning the basics of life.
Juvenile = Older child-aged dracovix in the middle stage between being helpless and being near-completely self sufficient.
Community Volunteer = A dracovix who helps other members of its community with chores, care, or baby-sitting duties. This is not so much an official job title as it is a general social expectation of any dracovixen community member without a different specific role to focus on, such as knights, gatherers, workers, or travelers, and is a role usually held by adolescent dracovix who've yet to devote themselves to a different path in life and have the time to help older members of the community.
Knight = Used mainly in dracovix kingdom settlements, and refers to dracovix who have trained to master a class and now serve the admirable role of protecting their kingdom from all forms of danger.
Dragon Scales (Ds) = In character, these are the currency used between dracovix. Despite their fancy name, they are not actually a dragon's scales - just well-crafted opalescent, pearl-like chips of rare minerals forged and flattened into coin shapes with a single tapered edge. When dracovix visit human settlements, their currencies are converted on a one-to-one basis with gold pieces.
