Writing is great. It gives you a sense of accomplishment when you finish a piece of writing. It can also help you express yourself better than talking or speaking. It can also help you improve your writing skills and become a better writer.
I used to think that writing was a waste of time. I mean, who wants to read a bunch of drivel when they could be doing something better, like watching TV or playing video games or something like that? But then I discovered the secret world of writing, and I've never been the same. What is it about writing that makes it so great?
I’m not sure when I first realized that writing was an important and enjoyable part of my life. Maybe it was when I was in third grade, and my teacher handed back a paper I had written, and my mom read it aloud and said, “I think you have a lot of potential.” Maybe it was when I was in college, and my professor handed back a paper I had written, and my professor said, “That’s great.” Maybe it was when I was working as a journalist, and my editor handed back a piece I had written, and she said, “That’s good.
Everyone has something to say. The best writers are able to find something worth saying in everything they read, see, and hear. The worst writers have nothing to say, and their readers can feel it. Even when a writer lacks something to say, though, their reader can often sense what's missing, and sometimes even feel a sense of satisfaction when they finally get to the end.
I’m lucky enough to have an awesome job. I get to write stories, build characters, and tell stories. I get to be creative and share my ideas with the world. And that’s awesome.
