If you begin with a personal, first-person, non-inferential story, you can often find ways to make it more universal so that it speaks to anyone who might listen, regardless of their background.
This seems to work. While a lot of my speaking is centered on the issue at hand, I find that this also opens my up to other topics that I may not otherwise have considered.
Also, many people believe that creativity is inborn and cannot be learned, but this is not true. Creativity can be learned, and it takes practice to get better. Practice consists of practicing in a variety of ways, with different materials, for different lengths of time, and under different conditions. You need time and practice to become better at anything, and creativity is no different.
I’ve also learned to keep self-promotion and advertising in check. Many public figures promote themselves incessantly, without regard to whether their content is helpful or even interesting to anyone other than themselves. This thinking is the hallmark of narcissism.
