I’m also a much better networker than I used to be. Networking is all about knowing your friends and your contacts, and one of the best ways to do that is to connect with people online.
As a teacher and speaker, I often find myself giving talks that are far too long. I often lose track of time, and quickly feel the invisible hand of the clock trying to drag me away. However, I do not believe that shorter talks are inherently better. Giving a good talk takes skill, practice, and lots of motivation.
I’ve also learned that some humility is necessary to avoid being at the mercy of my own self-esteem.
Since becoming an author, I’ve come to notice that my writing is all about me. My books are about me and my experiences, and my stories are all about ME. I’m not writing about what I want to say; I’m writing about ME. I’m not writing a book to help anyone else — I’m writing a book about ME.
A stronger case for the benefits of self-promotion is made when we think about the impact that self-promotion by public figures has on people. There is an incredible power in being able to command attention through the mechanism of public perception. When an individual can persuade people that they are important, they become important. That’s the power of being a public figure.
