28th March, in the morning Bapu and his soldiers left Mangrol and marched to Rayma. According to the routine Bapu’s public address to the villagers was scheduled at 3 o'clock that afternoon. Although the village was small and sparsely populated, people from surrounding villages had all gathered and an impressive crowd of almost fifteen to sixteen hundred people had gathered to listen to Bapu. Rayma was the last village of the Bharuch district and here Bapu would cross over to Surat district. Bapu reminded Dr. Chandulal of his promise to him and said, ‘Why don’t you repeat what you promised me over here.’ and so Dr. Chandulal declared to the people that ‘this morning Bapu has presented me with a spinning wheel and I have promised him that whenever I am in Bharuch I will on a daily basis spin khadi on it’. With a smile Bapu asked him ‘what will you do when you are not in Bharuch’ the whole crowd laughed. Bapu declared that the village barber had given him a shave and it was one of the best and closest shaves he ever had, he praised the barber who had also promised Bapu to become a volunteer in his satyagraha. The meeting ended with the recitation of Vande Matram.
The distance between Rayma and Umrachhi was almost ten miles but on reaching Umrachhi they didn’t feel as if they had hiked such a long distance. After evening prayers were held in a field on the way, Bapu and his band of marchers reached Umrachhi at 8.15 pm. Bapu and his band left Bharuch district and entered Surat district by crossing the Kim river. A small bamboo bridge had been built on the river by the people and Bapu was welcomed on the other bank by Dr. Suman Mehta and Mithu Ben Pitit and workers of the Indian National Congress of Surat district. Umrachhi is a small village and hardly had forty homes. it was surrounded by thorny bushes and almost felt as if it was in the midst of the forest, the entire village shared one sweet water well amongst them. Bapu and his platoon of marchers were housed in an open field close to the well. A bunch of press journalist arrived in Umrachhi by car and thinking that they would be provided with food and things they went around the whole village but could not find anything, finally they scrounged up a bowl of puffed rice and had to make do with it. The women of the village sang a song for Bapu pleading with him to get independence quick and come back victorious. People from the surrounding villages had all gathered to listen to Mahatma Gandhi, as usual on arrival he addressed them and gave the message of the importance of the breaking of the salt law, khadi and the giving up of alcohol. He said that Ram Rajya was the kingdom of the poor and the rule of the commoners. The meeting ended at 10.30 pm and finally Bapu and his party rested.
