The Iowa DOTs Traffic Critical Program is focused on work zone performance through a data driven approach to monitor, communicate, and continuously improve the mobility and safety of motorists during the construction season. Projects identified as Traffic Critical require enhanced traffic impact mitigation strategies, such as: Intelligent Work Zones (IWZ), limited construction hours (including night work), innovative contracting mechanisms, and Traffic Incident Management (TIM) plans to mitigate traffic impacts. The program has grown from 14 IWZ systems in 2014 to 34 in 2016.
On behalf of the Iowa DOT, the work zone mobility and safety data are continuously updated by the Center for Transportation Research and Education (CTRE) at Iowa State University via the REACTOR Lab. CTRE also provides assistance throughout the season by monitoring alerting systems as well as developing the work zone slow down/text alerting system.
