Mentors are an integral part of teaching. Building a professional support network is a critical component of teacher retention. Studies have shown that new teachers, whether university or industry route, benefit greatly from a mentor. Mentoring relationships between a seasoned teacher and a novice teacher increase novice teacher self-efficacy, teaching skills, and socialization among peers (Hanna, 2020).
Having a great relationship with your mentor is essential to your success. You need to be able to feel comfortable asking questions and accepting constructive criticism in order to improve your teaching ability. Mentors can be anyone, however most are typically the teacher you student teach or complete your practicum under.
