Grant Writing FAQ for CTE Teachers
Grants are a viable way to fund needed items for your classroom. CTE teachers will typically have a budget that funds items to enhance your curriculum. Depending on what size budget you have, you may need to supplement it by applying for grants.
There are many different types of grants available to teachers. Some are for large amounts of money dedicated to large projects, while others are smaller and are for use within a classroom. These classroom or mini grants are anywhere from $100 up to $5,000 per award, depending on the foundation or group that is sponsoring it. Classroom grants are a great way to fund projects that fall outside your CTE budget. CTSO grants can be used to support your specific student organization. General grants may have specific stipulations relating to expenditures, be sure to check before spending.
What’s a classroom grant and why would I want to get one?
Grants are a great way to supplement your program. They typically can be used for materials in your classroom, books, or even a special field trip. Questions to ask yourself:
· Do I have a good reason for a grant?
· Is my project or idea feasible? How will it enhance my classroom?
· How will this project or idea fit in with long-term goals for my program?
Make sure to read the grant application fully to make sure your grant project or idea qualifies.
I’m ready to apply for a classroom grant, what should I do first?
· Check the spreadsheet on the Classroom and General Grants page to see what grants may be available to you locally.
· Confirm due dates for applications. Some districts only offer grants in the fall or spring, while others offer them throughout the school year.
· Read the grant in its entirety. Limiting factors such as dollar amounts or restrictions for the funds will be stated. Some grants require school administrator input while others do not.
· Create a budget for your project or materials that includes a detailed list of every cost or fee relating to your grant.
While each grant application is unique to the foundation or organization sponsoring it, there are many sections that are similar. Most grant applications will ask how you are planning to use the money and how it will benefit your students. Be prepared to explain your project in detail. Descriptive adjectives help to paint a picture of how your project will enhance your classroom or curriculum.
