CTE Frameworks

Frameworks are essential documents in the CTE classroom. They are used as a guide throughout your class, highlighting standards that should be met by students as well as outlining leadership opportunities in and out of the classroom. Your CTE Administrator should give you copies of the frameworks for the classes you are teaching. There are two parts to the Framework:  General Summary Information and Specific Unit Information. 

The Summary Information is made up of the following components:

• Course Title

  • Title of your course

• Total Framework Hours

  • 90 if semester or 180 if year long

• CIP Code

  • https://www.k12.wa.us/student-success/career-technical-education-cte/cte-resources/cip-codes is a chart that outlines all CIP Codes with cross-referenced V-Codes.

• Exploratory or Preparatory

  • This is found on the online CIP Code chart above for the particular course. 

  • The exploratory program is an introductory course that incorporates state and national standards as well as demonstrates foundational and career cluster specific skills.  The program also demonstrates knowledge of applicable careers as well as leadership and employability skills.

• Date Last Modified

  • Date of the last modification for the framework.

• Career Clusters

  • The career cluster in which the course falls. This should align with the CIP Code chart. The 16 national career clusters are:

*Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources *Hospitality & Tourism

*Architecture and Construction *Human Services

*Arts, A/V Technology & Communications *Information Technology

*Business, Management & Administration *Law, Public Safety, Corrections, & Security

*Education & Training *Manufacturing

*Finance *Marketing

*Government & Public Administration *Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics

*Health Science *Transportation, Distribution, & Logistics

• Cluster Pathway

  • This is pathway within the Career Cluster such as Agriculture, Foods, & Natural Resources (Career Cluster) and Animal Systems (Cluster Pathway).

Each specific unit is broken into 2 areas:  Components & Assessments and Standards & Competencies.

Components & Assessments

• • Performance Assessments

    • Assessments used in the course and aligned with standards. Can include labs, specific projects, quizzes, and tests. Any certifications earned can be listed here.

  • Leadership Alignment

    • Leadership skills aligned to the 21st Century Skills that are being taught and assessed in the class. CTSO activities may be added here if all students are participating in the event/activity.

Standards & Competencies

Washington State CTE Standards should be included within your framework. A comprehensive list can be found at OSPI under Career and Technical Education. Washington State K-12 Learning Standards should also be included within your framework. A list of commonly used K-12 learning standards for the individual program can be found below:

• Agriculture

• Business and Marketing Education

• Computer Science

• English Language Arts (ELA)

• Educational Technology

• Environment and Sustainability

• Family and Consumer Sciences

• Financial Education

• Health and Physical Education

• Science

• Social Studies

• World Language

• • Unit

    • Title of the unit. Can be one word or short phrase.

  • Industry Standards and/or Competencies

    • List all standards and/or competencies that students will master. Competencies should reflect current industry standards. 

  • Total Learning Hours for Unit

    • Number of hours of instruction for the unit. All unit hours should equal the total framework hours.

  • Aligned Washington State Standards

    • The standards listed here should be specific to the unit and only those that are being taught and assessed should be included.

21st Century Skills

• The 21st Century Skills being taught throughout the entire course should be listed here.  This is only required one time per framework and is located at the end of the document.
