Writing Policy

For SLPPMs:

When writing school library policy, refer to relevant, existing school and district policy documents or those of state and national school library organizations.

Each policy is part of a larger public document which contains the vision and values of the school library. A Policy Statement is relatively brief, is written in general terms and contains statements of principles.

A Policy contains these elements:

  • A Rationale Statement that relates back to the school's vision and values and states the policy's impacts on students
  • A succinct Policy Statement encompassing the principles of:

goals and priorities

scope/development

funding

standards/assessments/measures

management

responsibility
