The participants were 9th and 10th grade students at Colegiul Național ”Simion Bărnuțiu”, a general education school, located in Șimleul Silvaniei, România, where they are studying modern languages and economics. The age range of the students is 15-16 years old, being oriented, in their home studies, towards modern languages and economics. The aim for the Romanian students is to foster foreign language studies and enrichment in Cypriote History and Geography through humanistic subjects as History, Geography, Universal Literature both through attendance to the classes in the school and through outdoor activities related to History, Geography of the local city and region.
The 2024 mobility brought our 21 Romanian students into the classrooms of the Paphos Music School. To match their academic profile (Modern Languages and Economics), learning activities focused on humanistic and artistic subjects: History, Geography, Music, and Art. We invite you to explore the photo carousel below to see our students engaged in these host school lessons.
Experiential Learning in Paphos: History and Literature Brought to Life
For our 2024 participants, learning seamlessly transitioned from theoretical lessons to hands-on exploration at the Archaeological Museum of Paphos. This cultural visit served as an interactive extension of their humanistic studies, allowing students to observe rare artifacts and relics reflecting Cyprus’s multilayered history. Through direct contact with these ancient remains, students sharpened their historical reasoning and learned to interpret museum displays as authentic mirrors of ancient culture, societal structure, and beliefs.
Uncovering Ancient Urban Life: Exploring the Nea Paphos UNESCO Site
Building upon their museum visit, the 2024 group stepped directly into history at the Nea Paphos Archaeological Site, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage landmark. As students navigated its ancient avenues, they studied the intricate Greco-Roman floor mosaics—vivid mythological narratives preserved in stone—while examining the spatial organization of an ancient polis, including its central Agora. Exploring the vast grounds also offered a firsthand lesson in historical continuity, as classical ruins interweave with later Byzantine and Ottoman structural remains, showcasing how Mediterranean cultures evolved and adapted over centuries.
Tombs of the Kings: History, Beliefs, and Ancient Traditions Outdoors
Our island exploration continued with a visit of profound historical significance to the monumental Tombs of the Kings necropolis. This experience served as a seamless continuation of local history lessons outdoors, allowing students to deepen their knowledge of ancient civilization, while discovering the intriguing local customs, traditions, and spiritual beliefs of ancient inhabitants regarding the afterlife and burial rites. Navigating these impressive underground structures carved into solid rock provided participants with unique hands-on experiences, reaffirming the power of lifelong learning beyond the traditional classroom.
From Beneficiaries to Erasmus+ Ambassadors: Dissemination and Peer-to-Peer Learning
Upon returning home, our mobility participants transformed their acquired experiences into a powerful learning catalyst for the entire school community. Targeting peers who did not participate in the international flows, the returning students designed an engaging series of dissemination and peer-learning activities. Through interactive presentations, role-playing games, thematic crosswords, and hands-on ‘Search and Place’ challenges, they immersed their classmates in the authentic atmosphere of the Cypriot and Greek host schools, sharing formal and non-formal insights into local culture, science, and traditions. Recognized as the most impactful cornerstone of our overall dissemination strategy, this phase proves that the true value of an Erasmus+ journey multiplies when shared.

The beneficiary group for the one-week mobility in Mytilini (Lesvos Island, Greece) consisted of 16 students in the 9th and 10th grades from "Simion Bărnuțiu" National College. Possessing a strong aptitude for STEM fields, all participants belong to the Real profile, specializing in Mathematics-Informatics and Natural Sciences. This mobility provided them with the opportunity to broaden their educational horizons and experience learning within a multicultural European environment.
Hands-on Learning and Exchange at the Mytilini Host School
During their integration into the partner school in Mytilini, our Romanian students actively attended Mathematics and Science classes, connecting theoretical knowledge from back home with local teaching practices. Alongside their academic routine, activities were tailored to enhance their digital skills and boost their English language fluency through collaborative teamwork with their Greek peers.
Cultural Immersion and Field Research: Discovering the Heritage of Lesvos
Complementing their classroom schedule, cultural itineraries during free time added a crucial dimension to the mobility in Lesvos. Although not all visits fell strictly within the realm of natural sciences, exploring these landmarks was essential for the students' holistic development. Participants investigated the spectacular Petrified Forest of Sigri (a unique UNESCO-protected natural monument closely linked to geology and natural history) admired ancient engineering at the impressive ruins of the Roman Aqueduct of Moria, and delved into local history at the Archaeological Museum of Mytilini. These field experiences provided a comprehensive understanding of Mediterranean culture and civilization, proving that true learning effortlessly connects diverse fields of knowledge.
