Teachers need to think about everything and not make any assumptions, go in with an open mind. With that being said, these students can have outbursts at any time.
Teachers have a huge impact on reactions from students. When the student feels safe with the teacher, their reflection will reflect on that. Additionally, students can have different reactions such as being defensive or defiant.
As a teacher, they need to become personal with a student by making specific connections. As well as trying to have a short conversation with the student for at least 2 minutes a day, checking in on them.
As a part of consistency, the teacher should present a schedule in the class. This lowers anxiety over what is happening next, or in the future of the day. As a student, not knowing what is next puts them on high alert. Additionally, if the student is comfortable in the classroom, they may try and grab the teacher's attention in another way. A teacher needs to provide an alternate way for the student to grab their attention without an outburst.
Teachers should allow/remind students that if they are having worrying thoughts they can always go to the calming corner if needed. As well as going for a short walk to clear their head. Additionally, the teacher should help students learn that they can always try and change their thoughts when they are anxious.
Students who have had a traumatic experience often interpret corrections with a negative connotation to themself. such as "You are dumb". As a teacher, you need to establish ways to give supportive feedback based on the student's personally.
One way to create islands of competence is to give the student the feeling of accomplishment by passing them a little note or telling them "Good job". Also, acknowledge where the student struggles with their self-esteem and replace it with what their strengths are as a student. Let the student know that they are doing a good job.
Let the student know when you acknowledge their feelings. Such as being upset, it is much more personable. To limit exclusionary practices teachers should not let behaviors go unnoticed or sending them somewhere by themself, as that it could trigger a response.
It's a good idea for a teacher to teach her class breathing exercises. These can be used in any instance but could be especially helpful for students who have experienced trauma.
It should be encouraged in a classroom for students to go to the library or calming corner when needed. It gives the student a moment to gather a new train of thought.
Educational coloring pages should be in access for all students when they need a moment to themselves. A teacher can moniter and make sure that the student does not get off topic. But it is something the student can do for a couple minutes to reset their mind.
