Each morning, have students line up outside the classroom and tap how they are feeling or what they may need. For example, the teacher can have a stop-light present to tap their mood. As well as a chart to enter the classroom for a high five or a hug. This can be established at the start of the school year for students to look forward to eachday.
Rule and rituals need to be consistent. Without students are enabled to try anything they want to in the classroom, as they will try and "test the waters". Students need to understand what will happen when rules are not followed in the classroom.
It's important for students to know what they can or cannot do when they are done early. At the start of the year the teacher should establish set rules. Without, students can cause a commotion in a classroom because they have no direction. Ideas could include, reading a book, doing homework, or going to the calming corner. This could also change depending on the assignment given. If that is the case, the teacher should tell the the students prior to starting the assignment.
At the end of each day, the teacher should discuss what was learned and what happened throughout the day. Both positives and even negatives. This is also a good time to bring up what is coming up for the next day. Students will be able to remember how the day went, but is also a helpful reminder.
Students often have a lot of questions throughout the day. Some students are comfortable with talking to the teacher and others may get anxious. With a general phrase or movements, teachers are aware of when a student needs assistance.
