It was a tough ride for this 2019 Lady Red Devils soccer team but one that ended on a high note. After struggling to just one win in the first games of the year, the Lady Red Devils defeated Bishop Carroll on Wednesday, October 16, to end their season with a victory. The girls’ soccer team is comprised of all high school grade levels, but this year’s team was a very young one, with only two seniors on the roster this season. When interviewed, the players expressed hope that they would get better with more games and are anticipating the rest of the season. Delaney Bunk, one of the players, said “We finished out the year with a bang, and hope to get better for next year.”
The team’s other win on the year, a 2-1 victory over Greater Johnstown HS on 10/02, showed some flashes of what will hopefully be future success. With almost the entire roster coming back next year, the Lady Devils will look to build on the momentum of that final victory and make many more of them in the coming years.
The boys soccer team has been off to a pretty solid start. Going 5-4 throughout the first half of the season, Central Cambria has had big wins over rival Bishop Carroll and Richland. One of their losses came to Chestnut Ridge in double overtime, 3-2. A lot of the same players are returning along with several freshmen joining the squad.
“In the beginning of the season our goal was to make the playoffs, but every week that goal becomes more and more achievable,” said Coach Zaffuto. “We want to play Westmont again and the only way to do that is to make to the district playoffs, and that’s our goal now.”
Zaffuto went on to highlight how close the guys on the team are and how well they play together. “We are a more possessive team than we have been in years past,” he said. Upcoming games against Somerset, Bedford, Chestnut Ridge, and Penn Cambria should be some of the team’s harder matchups, and will ultimately tell the tale of whether the Red Devils achieve those playoff goals in the future.
