BTEC 14A
biotechnology lab techniques - BTEC 14A (3 units)
An introduction to laboratory techniques needed for entry-level positions in the biotechnology industry and research laboratories. Intended as an introductory class for the students in preparation of the more advanced biotechnology classes and/or the Bioscience internship.
Some of what we do in Biotechnology Lab Techniques:
Making solutions and the related calculations
Bacteria cultures
Plasmid DNA mini-prep
Restriction enzyme digestion and DNA gel electrophoresis
Column chromatography for protein purification
Pre-requisites: None. A basic understanding of biology (DNA, replication, transcription, translation) and chemistry is needed - recommended course preparation is Bio 11 and Chem 32.
Programs: BTEC 14A is a requirement for the Lab Assistant Certificate, and can also be taken as part of the 4+ units of wet lab courses needed for the Bioscience Internship program (for those not going through the Bridge to Bioscience Program). BTEC 14A is a major elective for the Biotechnology AS degree.
