Prior to joining the CCSF Biotechnology program I had recently completed High School and was interested in a teaching career. During the pandemic I was looking for something that could help propel me forward into a career. I had some prior experience in biotech through my high school and recognized that a career in the field would allow me to contribute to society.
The CCSF Biotechnology program has provided me with a lot of connections in the field, taught me a solid set of lab techniques and concepts, and the importance of networking.
I completed my internship at the Biospecimen Bank, NRG Oncology, at UCSF which collects and stores human tissue samples for Oncology Clinical Trials. My internship project was focused on how best to store biospecimens for future research. This included streamlining kit processes and following SOPs for processing incoming and outgoing biospecimen samples. I learned a lot about the importance of specific processes in handling human samples as well as the importance of asking questions and performing techniques well repeatedly. I now understand the importance of how these processes ensure the quality of biospecimens scientists will have to study cancer and improve human health.
