Hi! My name is Miko Mallari and joined the CCSF Biotechnology Program to further my education and pick up relevant skills to be both successful and competitive in the bioscience industry. During my time here I will have completed the Biotechnology, Stem Cell Technology, and Biotechnology Work Experience Certificates, as well as the AS Degree in Biotechnology. Along with these accolades, this program has allowed me to have the privilege of participating in the UCSF-CCSF Inclusive Mentorship Program allowing me to have an experience interviewing and taking an internship at Jim Wells’ Lab in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at UCSF and being under the direction of Postdoctoral Fellow, James Byrnes, and PhD Candidate, Susanna Elledge. At the Wells lab I was part of a team investigating an protein engineering project in relation to bispecific antibody technology with applications in Immunology and Oncology. I had a great experience learning methods in bioconjugation, assay development, and was able to practice much of the bench work I built a foundation in during my time in the Biotechnology Program at CCSF. I also enjoyed being a part of the lab community there where I was surrounded by a number of bright and supportive individuals.
Fall 2021 Update: I am currently participating in the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) Bridge to Stem Cell internship program. This internship has allowed me to partner with Dr. Marcus Muench of Vitalant Research Institute to further my learning of stem cell technology while utilizing their potential in applications relating to transfusion medicine. Following this 9-month internship I am planning on pursuing graduate school opportunities.
I am a Bay Area native only leaving for some time to study Environmental Chemistry and Studio Art at the University of Redlands before a post graduate experience in a bioscience laboratory sparked my interest in the potential of the biotechnology industry. Following being exposed to the industry ultimately led me to finding the CCSF program which provided me with all these great opportunities. Aside from schooling I am an avid outdoor enthusiast and enjoy much of my free time in the climbing gym or trying to find peaks to summit.
I will say that in 2020 before I took the internship support class [part of the Bioscience Internship Program], I had been independently trying to look for opportunities and it was very discouraging after many applications and very little success. I'm very glad that I decided to continue the program and do this internship, I felt like I grew a lot and if you asked me last year if I would have ever thought I would be having a dilemma as to which opportunity I wanted to pursue further, it would have been hard for me to believe."
