My name is Denis Galo, I have graduated from San Francisco State with a Bachelors of Science with a concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology, I have a certificate in coding, and I am pursuing the Biotechnology Work Experience Certificate at CCSF. Currently I am interning with the Manoli Lab at UCSF. Every experience in the past has given me the opportunity to demonstrate my abilities through practical work experience, I have been involved in several projects that involve immunohistochemistry, PCR and bioinformatics from school. My motivation comes from my own interest in trying to understand the brain, I have personally seen how dementia can affect a person and take their memories away. I want to use the knowledge that I am gaining to help others that are suffering from neurological diseases and disorders.
Skills learned in internship: I am currently participating in an internship with the Manoli Lab through the Biotechnology program of City College of San Francisco. I have explored topics on the brain such as basic anatomy, action potentials and how oxytocin modulates behavior in different areas of the brain. I am learning about prairie voles and how their vocalizations are involved in the pair bonding process. The focus of the project currently is to determine brain regions that respond to vocal signals in monogamous prairie voles. I have been learning histology techniques such as in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and using cfos antibody staining as a method to detect how prairie voles respond to auditory stimulus, I am learning how to use different software such as image j and cell profiler as well.
Future Plans : I am still finishing my internship with the Manoli Lab but I applied to the Junior Specialist position with the Manoli Lab and I got the job. Now I plan on working with the Manoli Lab to gain some experience. I would like to pursue a graduate degree and continue researching the brain.
