My name is Karen Rincon Romero. I graduated from Universidad Industrial de Santander UIS from Colombia with a Bachelor of Science with a concentration in Microbiology and bioanalysis. During my time at CCSF I had the opportunity to earn a certificate in Biotechnology and I am pursuing my second certification called Biotechnology Work Experience Certificate. Currently, I am a research intern at the Manoli Lab at UCSF. In previous experiences, I had the opportunity to work in clinical diagnostic labs as medical laboratory technologist intern. In addition, I worked as Clinical Data Manager with Merck Sharp & Dohme MSD, where Executed end -to- end data management activities for oncology clinical trials in compliance with Merck’s SOPs, ICH-GCP guidelines and FDA regulations (21 CFR Part 11). I am interested in biotechnology field because I am passionate about people’s health and how I can be part of the process of producing safety treatments to improve people’s quality of life.
At my internship I have the great opportunity to work with my mentor Kimberly Long and the exceptional group of scientists in the Manoli Lab focusing on investigating social behavior and pair bonding using the model organism monogamous prairie voles. I have learned different techniques in neuroscience such as: cryosectioning, fluorescence microscopy, PCR, and animal handling. Also, I have learned coding skills for analyzing data by using Python, Jupyter Notebook, and Matplotlib.
I am looking forward to starting my career in the biotechnology field. Also, I would like to pursue a master’s degree in biotechnology management.
