Prior to starting the Biotech program, I was working in retail, but I wasn’t content with my position. After taking a three-year break from school I decided that I wanted to start a career in science, so I enrolled at the CCSF in the Fall of 2017 to take classes in the Bridge to Bioscience program. I didn’t have much background experience in biotechnology, so that was one of my biggest concerns, but the program allowed me to learn the math, terminology and the practical lab techniques to succeed.
I enrolled in the Biotech program because I love science, biology and research. Also, to hopefully enter an internship to improve my lab skills and to build a network that could help me start a career in science.
The CCSF Biotech program gave me the opportunity to learn skills for a new career. What I really liked about the CCSF Biotech program is how passionate, and helpful the professors are. Also, the hands-on lab experiences were extremely helpful, and that you didn’t have to have a science background to start and complete the program.
The internship allowed me to gain many new lab skills, soft skills and to feel very confident in a lab. What made me extremely happy about completing my internship is the valuable experience and the network of people I had the chance to meet.
After completing my internship, I was offered a position as a Biological Science Aid at the USDA, which made me very happy. As a result, my lab skills are improving every day, and I am also much more confident about my knowledge and lab skills.
I feel much more prepared now. After my internship my lab skills have improved tremendously, and now I have a part-time position at the USDA as a Biological Laboratory Aid.
To the current and future students in the CCSF Biotech program, you should expect to work really hard, study tremendously and to commit! Take advantage of all the resources, and take as many classes as possible before going into an internship.
