Before the CCSF Biotechnology program, I was working as a teacher and waiter. I knew I wanted to go back to school but I was concerned I would not get into a masters program because my B.S. degree was in a soft science, I had no laboratory experience and I had been out of school for a couple of years. I entered the CCSF Biotechnology program to get the experience I needed to apply for graduate school.
I loved how encouraging and helpful the teachers were and how hands-on the classes were. I enjoyed my Bioscience internship so much that when the four-month requirement was reached I continued on and stayed there for a full year. That internship directly helped me get my current junior specialist position. Being a part of the CCSF Biotech program is what got me on the exciting path I am on now to a career in academic research.
What surprised you the most or made you the happiest about completing the CCSF Biotech program/internship?
I never expected to get a job through my internship!
If it wasn’t for the program, I would probably still be working at a restaurant with no clue what I want to do with the rest of my life. Entering the program helped me discover my passion for academic research, gave me the tools to pursue this career and also encouraged me to believe I am capable of being a scientist even though I do not have as strong of a scientific background as others may.
Do you feel you are better prepared for your future career?
Yes, because of the program I am now employed as a Junior Specialist in a Neurobiology lab at UCSF.
What advice would you offer to current and future students? What would you tell them to expect as a student of the Biotech program?
Don’t let imposter complex get the best of you! Your ability to succeed in science comes down to passion and drive. You get out what you put in.
