For this assignment, we had to search for and share recent examples of cybersecurity articles in the news.
The article discusses an incident where hackers stole data from a company used by major Wall Street banks for real estate loans and mortgages, SitusAMC. Hacking is when someone gains unauthorized access to data in a system. For banks as well-known as those on Wall Street, the news of being linked to a cyberattack, even if because of a user of the impacted brand, negatively impacts the company's image. SitusAMC warned its customers that they may have been affected by the data breach, and that no encrypting malware was involved. This could be prevented by tighter security measures within the database.

This article discusses the surge of scam calls and messages during the holidays. This is in the form of phishing and spoofing. Scammers use AI to generate and imitate an individual to trick people into thinking they are talking with someone they know over the phone. They also use AI to generate fake travel sites that steal personal information and money, social media ads, and to sell fake tickets to shows, events, games, etc. Everyone could be affected by this, but it was targeting older generations. This can be prevented by contacting the person who "called" and having them verify the story, checking URLs for misspellings, using reputable websites and looking for reviews and complaints, avoiding clicking links in unexpected texts or emails, and contacting your bank directly if there is any suspicious activity.

During my search for articles, I learned just how common cybersecurity breaches are. There were tons of articles on the same topic, but different incidents, just within a few days of each other. I learned that most of these incidents were completely preventable; it was just a matter of better security or common sense when it comes to suspicious messages or pop-ups.
