For this unit, our project is to reflect on social media usage and describe the impact social media has on society.
I agree with my results. I use social media a lot for personal use as well as professional use. I could definitely cut back on it, sometimes I just open and close apps, getting bored easily. A social media habit I want to change is to stop checking my accounts as soon as I wake up. I tend to spend the first twenty minutes of my morning on my phone when I could be getting ready for the day or doing something much more productive. I spend about three hours a day on social media according to my screen time, which was less than I was expecting, but it has gone down since the semester started.
I found it interesting that YouTube was still the most popular social media platform in a world of TikTok. I would have thought that TikTok would be the most popular, considering its content consists of short videos, and especially in today's world, a lot of people have a short attention span. While every platform has a "shorts" feature to spotlight videos that are a few seconds of similar content, it typically originates on TikTok. However, I can see how YouTube would be the most popular as it has everything, from tutorials on how to cook and DIY crafts, to workout videos, music videos, vlogs, and lyric videos, in more depth/detail than a 30 second video on any other platform.
I believe social media is having a negative impact on society. Many people use social media as an escape from reality, which may seem good in theory, but it has its flaws. I believe some of the content has created unrealistic standards for everyone. We mostly only see the good, or post what we want others to see or think about us, but nobody knows what's happening behind the camera or keyboard. We have filters on social media that alter how we look in one way or another, or we can edit photos, which has started the trend of unrealistic beauty standards. In a world of rage bait, it is easy to get on social media for fun, only to leave upset by what a stranger may have posted. On top of that, there is just negative content constantly circulating on social media, such as hate trains and smear campaigns. In conclusion, what was once used for socializing with people online and creating an entertaining bubble has become more for consumption rather than communication.
I learned about the evolution of social media, how it went from connecting with people you know, to consuming content you enjoy. I learned that YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram are still the most popular social media platforms amongst US adults and are continuing to gain popularity.
