Se denomina contaminación atmosférica o contaminación ambiental a la presencia de cualquier agente (físico, químico o biológico) o una combinación de varios agentes en lugares, formas y concentraciones tales que sean nocivos para la salud, para la seguridad y el bienestar de la población, o puedan ser perjudiciales para los seres vivos en general.

La investigación se realizó bajo una metodología de tipo documental bibliográfica. Los diferentes agentes contaminantes del ambiente son capaces de causar múltiples enfermedades en las personas que deterioran su calidad de vida, ocasionan un daño generalizado a la familia, al aparato productivo de una nación, al gasto público e incluso es responsable de una alta tasa de mortalidad, sobre todo en las poblaciones más vulnerables como lo son los pobres y los niños.
