Language
Reflections on learning a second language by ear.
To speak is different than to understand.
My mind leaps with each word received,
Tangos to the rhythm of each sentence,
and when my library of unconscious connections to meanings
fails to provide me with direction,
context usually bequeaths the makeshift steps.
But when it comes time for me to conduct,
I start with a slow waltz --
Then a few bars in,
the baton slips out of my grip
falling,
falling,
until it clatters on the floor.
