RIO GRANDE
At the May meeting of Rio Grande Division 6, Superintendent Buzz Lenander presented Treasurer Sandy Savage with the "Golden Spike Award".
After the business portion of the meeting was completed, a Model Contest was held, with over 20 models of all scales entered. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three winners, as judged by popular vote. Each modeler was asked to talk about their entry/entries: how they made the model, what was the inspiration for the model, etc.
The winners were: First $25 - Bill Luxford with his highly detailed and colorfully decorated G scale Circus car, one of many he is famous for. Second $15 - Buzz Lenander had his Union Pacific WreckMaster D8 Caterpillar on a Depressed Center Flat car, with a scratch built Side Boom, in N scale. Third $10 - Bill Bullers for a beautiful HO diorama of a Coal Tipple his father owned. He included many pictures of the prototype tipple.
The 22nd Albuquerque Train Show took place at the Fairgrounds in mid-May. Layouts included at the Show were: N Scale - New Mexico Rail RunNers, and Clovis Area Train Society; HO scale - Albuquerque Society of HO Modular Engineers, and Rio Grande Model Railroad Club (Youth Club of Division 6); HOn3 - New Mexico Narrow Gauge; HO, N, ands On30 - Pecos East Switching; O scale - TTOS New Mexico Division; and the HO Rio Grande Valley layout was open in the Bolack Building next door to the Show.
July 8th was our annual Railfan the Transcon (BNSF) on the hill in Mountainair, NM.
Temperature at 9:15 am was a nice 77 degrees, with about five trains passing through town in the next hour or so.
We then worked our way back to Scholle, at the eastern edge of Abo Canyon, where we saw three more trains, including a "manifest" with BNSF, KCS, and NS locomotives struggling up the hill.
It was then on to Belen to check out the fueling racks by the Harvey House. Several new locomotives were being serviced.
Temperature was up to about 85 degrees when we headed for Lunch at Pete's Restaurant across the street at 1:00 pm. The July meeting was held while waiting for the food to be served, and completed in a record time of 15 minutes. Lots of pictures were taken and a number of our Youth Club members joined in the fun.
The next meeting of Rio Grande Division 6 will be Saturday, September 9th. Programs for the meeting will include an airbrush weathering clinic, and a video presented by two of the Youth Club members. Rio Grande Division 6 meets the second Saturday of the odd-numbered months at Domingo Baca MultiCultural Center. For more information check out our website.
