After Denver City Council approved the ordinance to create a supervised injection site, the only thing standing in its way is a needed change in state law. 9NEWS has covered various aspects of the proposed ordinance, including a breakdown of how Vancouver has navigated the safe injection sites and what Denver envisions its supervised sites to look like. Another part of the proposed ordinance, according to its champion City Council member Albus Brooks, are the resources that are to be provided to people so they can test their drugs for fentanyl - a drug mentioned in the news regularly due to its lethality.

At a time when inequities in criminal justice are the focus of intense national debate, blacks and Latinos are overrepresented at every step in Colorado’s criminal process compared with their numbers in the general population. Black and Latino Coloradans are disproportionately incarcerated, shot by police, arrested and detained as youth, arrested for marijuana, sent back to prison from parole, and disadvantaged by a criminal record, a Rocky Mountain PBS News examination of state data, records and reports shows. In 2014, black adults were six times more likely than white adults to be in jail or prison in the state, and Latino adults were nearly 1½ times more likely, according to the analysis. One cause cited by experts is widely acknowledged discrimination within the system – often discussed as implicit or unrecognized bias. Others cite failures in schools and neighborhoods that clear the path to the criminal justice system.

A lawsuit that accused Colorado regulators of quietly and illegally concocting a policy to police doctors who recommend medical marijuana to patients was entirely hidden from public view during a nearly three-year court battle, secreted behind a judge’s order to keep it that way, The Denver Post has found. Nine physicians filed the lawsuit in Denver District Court in March 2015 against the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, which regulates and maintains the state’s medical marijuana registry, and the Colorado Medical Board, which regulates doctors. A judge initially agreed with the doctors’ assertion that the policy was created illegally, but an appeals court overturned that decision late last month.
