When you’re applying for jobs in your 20s, do employers care about whether you were active in honor societies/participated in academic clubs/took honors program courses? I read your post explaining that hiring managers (usually) don’t care about GPA, and I wondered if college student extracurriculars fell into this category too. (I’m talking Beta Gamma Sigma, not water polo.) Does having more extracurricular stuff on your resume give you an edge over an identical candidate who doesn’t?

A GPA is a universal gauge across all majors that allows for the quantification of a candidate’s academic success. This gauge is particularly important for positions inside financial firms that welcome a broad array of backgrounds. Asset class researchers, Investment Bankers, Operations Support, Compliance, HR, all of these positions are relatively non-discriminant when it comes to educational background. If that’s the case, how does one judge the aptitude of a Physics Major who lived in the lab to a Business Major who lived in the library? Cross-checking success on general education classes everyone had to take? No. Nobody has the time to be so scrupulous with a transcript. Rationalizing that one major is harder than the other? Sometimes. But not always.

The first, obvious predictor of career success is the training students received in their four or more years of studying toward a degree. Most background screenings verify a graduate's educational credentials - including certifications and exam performance - with some companies using Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that require certain GPA thresholds to get an interview. Beyond GPA, companies should screen young candidates for the type of leadership potential that points to future contributions in a work environment. A student with a leadership role in college, be it as student council president or head of the campus book club, will likely have that highlighted in their resume. An academic advisor may be able to elaborate on the grad's contributions to a group or position, confirming (or invalidating) the initiative, trustworthiness and follow through that employers prize in an applicant. Reviewing even part-time job or internship performance could further show off a candidate's experience in organized, task-focused efforts.
