OBJECTIVES:
Work with large numbers and amounts.
Learn and practice vocabulary and expressions related to financial statements.
Understand and use three key financial documents:
Income Statement
Balance Sheet
Cash Flow Statement
Present financial statements to shareholders.
STEP 1: ACTIVATE Verifying and Stimulating Prior Knowledge on Moodle
Overview: This initial phase is designed to assess and activate students’ existing knowledge before introducing new content. Conducted on Moodle, students engage in diagnostic and interactive activities that revisit key concepts to ensure they are ready to learn about financial statements. These activities are extremely important in this module.
Activities:
Diagnostic tasks:
· Identifying different ways to write numbers;
· Listening comprehension to check understanding of numbers;
· Pronunciation practice for large numbers;
· Self-assessment quiz.
Goal: Ensure students have a foundational understanding of the topic and are ready to build new skills in the TRAIN phase.
STEP 2: TRAIN
Building Skills Through Interactive Practice on Moodle
Overview: This phase bridges the gap between prior knowledge and immersive VR practice. Students build confidence and fluency through structured, interactive tasks that simulate real-world business communication. In this module, students will be introduced to three key financial statements: the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement.
Activities:
Learn about the Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow Statement.
Engage in activities for each type of statement:
Listening comprehension quizzes;
Reading comprehension quizzes;
Fill-in-the-blank exercises;
Drag-and-drop tasks;
Vocabulary builder: describing and explaining the particularities of each financial statement;
Crosswords to reinforce the necessary vocabulary;
Mini-assessments to track progress and readiness for Step 3 (VR Experience).
Resources: Original financial statement documents will be provided to teach vocabulary and business protocol.
Goal: Prepare students for the complexity and interactivity of the VR experience by reinforcing vocabulary, grammar, and communication strategies.
*** In the Financial Statement Module, within the TRAIN section of the Income Statement practice, the activities in the interactive book titled Income Statement Vocabulary Listening and Crosswords must be linked to their respective files available in the Content Bank. Alternatively, these activities are available as extra practice to be completed after students have finished the main interactive book, Income Statement, allowing for reinforcement and extension of key vocabulary and concepts.
STEP 3: Experience Real-World Scenarios
Students must have completed STEPS 1 and 2 on Moodle before starting STEP 3. They are ready to present financial statements by having an optimal immersive experience.
OBJECTIVES:
Students will present financial statements to a simulated board of directors.
VR CONTEXTS:
Students are employees at TAG Shoes and will participate in an interactive simulation designed to reinforce their understanding of financial statements.
Activity Overview
The simulation takes place in a virtual hall with four doors:
Three doors represent the financial statements:
o Income Statement
o Balance Sheet
o Cash Flow Statement
The fourth door leads to the Board of Directors’ room for the final presentation.
A look at some of the Moodle activities and Virtual Reality
experience
Students will knock on each of the three doors to enter rooms where they practice each financial statement with an expert.
In each room, students engage in:
Interactive quizzes;
Pronunciation checks;
Listening and reading exercises.
These activities help reinforce vocabulary, comprehension, and presentation skills.
After completing all practice rooms, students proceed to the Board of Directors’ room.
They will present the financial statements as if in a real corporate setting.
Throughout the VR experience, students complete short quizzes and decision-making tasks to reinforce learning and demonstrate mastery of the content.
Remind the students that they can always click on the EXIT sign to proceed. However, they will not accumulate STARS.
Review the Briefing and Debriefing Guide before starting this activity to ensure a smooth facilitation process.
Briefing: Contains information about the objectives of each level, as well as any documents to interpret, and professional communication skills students will apply.
Print out the peer evaluations (found in the Briefing and Debriefing Guide) to hand out before the VR experience.
Debriefing: Allow time for partners to give peer feedback. Make a copy of the self-evaluation form and send it to students. The self-evaluation encourages students to reflect on their learning process and helps them to set communication goals.
