Toupeirinha

Overview

Toupeirinha (or "Little Mole" in English) is a game developed for the Game Design II and Engine for games I classes in UFN which project theme was "underground".

Trying to create some kind of "unusual mechanic" and being inspired by games like Darkwood (2017) and stories of H.P. Lovecraft, we decided to create a top-down puzzle game with a mole that mades some covenant with a Cthulhu-like creature.

Due to this covenant, our protagonist Mole lost his vision, but acquired the ability to "see with other creatures eyes". Using its new power the mole should found a way out of the ruins.

Our class objective was create levels that teaches the player how to play the game, this is why we focus so much in easy levels, trying to teach step by step the fundamental rules of our game, unfortunately we wasn't able to create more levels that uses our mechanic as good as we intended.

We started this project in the end of April of 2018, and had about two months to finish the prototype.

Game n' Level Design

After we decided what kind of core mechanic we wanted for our game, we started to create features for this ability and how we could use this to create interesting puzzles through the game.

We decided that every animal that makes noise will be visible for the player as long as the mole is able to hear them, with this we started to create types os animals with different behaviours and combining them creating challenges to the player.

But we thought that this game should have some kind of danger for the mole since it is in a cthulhu-like ruins, than we create the pits and the evil creatures to kill the player, but all of it can be overcome if the player think quick and use its power to defeat them. We create "lock and key situations" that asks the player to get a candle and burn some runes, or defeat some creature to have your path safe.

The mechanic we create that allowed us to create more fun situations was the "statues eyes" that is cthulhu statues which the Mole can "see with its eyes" to reveal the "other world" that switch object's places or create them.

Art

Arthur Bertol made the Concept art for the creatures and collectables. I created the sprites, backgrounds and menu for the game using the app Procreate for iPad Pro.
