BMS Choirs

BMS Choirs

BMS runs 5 choirs, catering for all age groups from Year3 upwards. Our choirs perform a wide variety of music, giving their members a great opportunity to experience music from different cultures, musical eras and genres. See our BMS Choirs Gallery for videos of past performances and recordings.

BMS Choirs reach high standards of performance and as a result have performed at a number of high profile venues including The Royal Albert Hall, The Houses of Parliament, The National Gallery, Wembley Arena and Symphony Hall - Birmingham, amongst others.

Entry to the choirs is by audition.

"My daughter is benefiting so much from being a part of the choir, she enjoys it so much and her singing has really come on. She sang a solo at school last week which she would not have had the confidence to do pre-BMS choir. I feel extremely grateful she has the opportunity to be a part of the choir with all the experiences it brings." Parent

What happens in the audition?

Auditions usually happen in groups and are a little bit like a rehearsal. We will do a warm up together, and teach you a short song. We will then ask you to sing part or all of the song on your own as well as some of the vocal exercises from the warm up. It's a very friendly no-pressure process and nothing to worry about. You do not need to prepare a song to sing. It may not be practical to tell you the outcome of your audition on the day, but you will receive an email with the result within 3 days of your audition.

How many concerts do you do?

The Junior and Intermediate choirs perform at least once a term, sometimes more when the opportunity arises. They perform at Wembley Arena every other year and usually enter the  Music For Youth Festival which has resulted in performances at Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. In the past, the Intermediate Choirs have taken part in the BBC proms. We try to take advantage of performance opportunities as they arise.

What does a rehearsal look like?

A weekly rehearsal will always start with a warm up to get our voices, bodies and brains ready for singing. We will work on learning lots of different songs depending on what the upcoming performances are. We learn some songs with music and some without, but by the time the performance comes, we usually sing everything from memory. We usually have a break where you can talk with your friends, make new friends from lots of different schools and eat a snack.

What should I bring to rehearsals?

Do you have any rules?

Pupils in our choirs join because they love singing, want to sing well and work as a team to be the best they can be. Therefore in rehearsals we expect full concentration, no chatting and overall excellent behaviour. No mobile phones should be out or switched on during rehearsals. Anyone who doesn't behave in this way will be asked to leave the choir.

What do you have to wear for concerts?

Intermediate and Junior Choirs - BMS T-shirt, black trousers/skirt (at least knee-length), black socks/tights and black shoes.
