The Origins of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team
Mercedes’ involvement in Formula 1 dates back to the early days of the sport, but the modern incarnation of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team has its origins in 2010. Prior to that, Mercedes had a long history in motorsport, with their first Formula 1 entry in 1954. However, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that Mercedes returned to F1 as a constructor with a full factory-backed team. The pivotal moment came when Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, acquired the Honda F1 team in 2009. The Honda team had struggled in F1, but after the takeover, Mercedes made substantial investments and rebranded the team as Mercedes GP.
