Comeback for the first Chinese F1 Driver?
05.02.2025
In a significant development for the 2025 Formula 1 season, Scuderia Ferrari has appointed Zhou Guanyu as one of its reserve drivers. This move comes after Zhou's departure from Sauber, where he competed for three seasons, marking a return to familiar territory for the Chinese driver, who was previously part of the Ferrari Driver Academy from 2015 to 2018.
Zhou, 25, made history as China's first Formula 1 driver. During his tenure with Sauber, he participated in 68 Grand Prix races, securing 16 championship points and recording two fastest laps. His experience and familiarity with Ferrari's systems make him a valuable asset to the team.
In his new role at Ferrari, Zhou will share reserve driver duties with Antonio Giovinazzi, who also has commitments in the World Endurance Championship for Ferrari. This collaboration ensures that Ferrari has experienced drivers ready to step in when needed during the season.
Reflecting on his return to Ferrari, Zhou expressed enthusiasm about rejoining the team where he spent formative years of his racing career. He stated, "Returning to Ferrari feels like coming home. I'm eager to contribute to the team's success in any way I can."
Zhou's appointment fills the vacancy left by Oliver Bearman, who has transitioned to a full-time race seat with Haas for the upcoming season. Additionally, Zhou maintains connections with the General Motors-backed Cadillac team, which plans to enter Formula 1 in 2026, initially utilizing Ferrari engines and gearboxes.
As the 2025 season approaches, Ferrari's strategic move to bring Zhou Guanyu on board underscores the team's commitment to leveraging experienced talent to bolster their championship campaign.
