The Undefeated

The fourth weekend in college baseball saw the end to two more perfect seasons. #6 Florida State (13-1, 2-1) was shut out by Virginia Tech (9-5, 1-2), 6-0, in Game One of Saturday's doubleheader. Despite the early loss, the Seminoles took Game Two, earning Coach Mike Martin the 2000th win of his career. #24 Tennessee's (15-1) perfect season lasted one day longer. They lost 10-7 to Fresno State (7-5) on Sunday but still won the series 2-1. For the first time this season, Tennessee's stellar pitching staff struggled, albeit against a good Fresno State offense.

Both #16 North Carolina State (15-0, 3-0) and #21 Arizona State (15-0) earned weekend sweeps and stayed perfect on the season. The Wolfpack squeaked by with a 4-3, come-from-behind win on Friday over Pitt (6-7) and a tight, 6-5, win on Sunday. Tucked in the middle of these two tight games was a 21-3 shellacking of Pitt. NC State is off to a strong start to ACC play but will be tested next week. They play Charlotte (8-7) and George Mason (8-5) in the midweek before hosting Florida State over the weekend in what promises to be of the highlights of ACC play. Arizona State took on Xavier (5-9) and had no troubles with the Musketeers. Next week, the Sun Devils face New Mexico State's (14-3) high-flying offense in the midweek and then host Washington State (6-8) to begin Pac-12 play.

UPDATE 3/14/19

North Carolina State (17-0, 3-0) and Arizona State both survived their midweek match ups to stay undefeated on the season. NC State left Charlotte with a hard-fought, 6-5, win over the 49ers. The Wolfpack hosted George Mason on Wednesday and dominated the game, 18-3, behind an offensive explosion. NC State will be tested this weekend as they continue ACC play against Florida State (13-2, 2-1) who is coming off a disappointing result against Florida (lost 20-7).

Arizona State subdued New Mexico State's offense in their Wednesday match up, coming away with a 7-3 win. The Aggies were one of Arizona State's toughest tests to date, and the Sun Devils passed with flying colors. This weekend, Arizona State plays host to Washington State. The Sun Devils will have to be careful not to overlook the Cougars who are looking to right the ship in conference play.

UPDATE 3/18/19

NC State won their series at Florida State but dropped the serieis finale to fall from the ranks of the undefeated. With their sweep of Washington State, Arizona State is the last undefeated team standing.

The Undefeated

Two and a half weeks into the season, and we're down to 4 undefeated teams in Division I Baseball. #10 LSU fell from the ranks of the undefeated in emphatic fashion, getting swept on the road at #9 Texas. #2 Oregon State slipped up at home against West Virginia on Sunday but only after already clinching the series.

The only undefeated, top ten team left is #8 Florida State who faces North Florida in the midweek and hosts Virginia Tech this weekend. Up seven spots to #16, NC State travels to North Carolina Central on Wednesday before hosting Pittsburgh over the weekend. At #24, Arizona State enters the top 25 this week. They will have to get through two tough road games at Cal State Fullerton in the midweek before a weekend match-up with Xavier. Just outside the top 25, #28 Tennessee goes to Troy on Tuesday and hosts Fresno State for three games over the weekend.

The Undefeated

A week and a half into the season, and only 13 of the 299 Division I baseball teams are still perfect. Three teams in the top ten, including #1 LSU, #4 Oregon State, and #9 Florida State are still perfect on the young season. #14 Baylor, #19 Michigan, and #23 NC State round out the rest of the top 25 teams that have yet to lose this year.

Perhaps one of the most surprising teams among the undefeated is Tennessee who currently has the best pitching staff in the country. Tennessee starts conference play off in two weeks at Auburn, but will have nine non-conference games between now and then to test them too. California Baptist (9-0) has the most wins of the group, but several schools are close behind at eight. UMASS (1-0) has the fewest wins of the remaining undefeated teams, as cold weather has limited their schedule so far. Which team will keep their streak the longest?

Beginner's Luck or just getting started?

Making the NCAA Baseball Tournament for the first time in program history is hard, but doing it back-to-back is even harder. The last 16 tournament newbies have failed to earn a bid the following year. This year, the University of Hartford is looking to be the first team since Bryant University (2013 & 2014) to make the tournament the year after their first bid.
