Week Eight offers the most intriguing match up of the year so far as #1 UCLA (21-5, 7-2) takes on #2 Stanford (19-3, 6-0) in a weekend series. The Bruins travel to Sunken Diamond in a battle of Pac-12 heavyweights.
At ten games, Stanford currently boasts the longest winning streak in the country. After losing back-to-back games to Cal State Fullerton and Texas, Stanford ripped off three straight wins to claim the series with Texas and swept Utah and Washington State to start off perfect in Pac-12 play. The Cardinal have quietly become one of the most dominant teams in the country and hope to carry that momentum into this weekend.
The Bruins own a few streaks of their own, having won six straight series to start the season. They also own a two-year winning streak against Stanford. The Bruins took two out of three last year in Las Angeles, and two out of three in 2017 the last time they made the trip to Palo Alto. If the Bruins hope to win the Pac-12, this road series will crucial in setting the early tone in the Pac-12 race.
Runs will be a commodity, as the match up between UCLA and Stanford features the two best pitching staffs in the country. The Cardinal rank first nationally, only giving up 2.7 runs per game, while the Bruins rank second, allowing 2.9 runs per game. In addition, the Bruins have an impressive six shutouts this season already. Both UCLA and Stanford only played midweek games on Tuesday to ensure that their pitching staffs were fully rested for the weekend.
