The meeting in Varazdin, Croatia

19th - 23rd September, 2022

The meeting in Varazdin was hosted by Gospodarska skola Varazdin. This meeting's agenda focused on metal upcycling and sustainability.

Before the meeting, the Croatian team prepared a piece of art made from cans to be further processed during the meeting. Indeed, the peak of the activities organised with partners was the refinement of this piece of art and its placement at the school's entrance

Another outcome was to create a booklet containing ideas for promoting sustainability in our everyday lives.

The idea was to show the partners one of Croatia’s gems when it comes to natural attractions, to be able to appreciate not only cultural but also our natural heritage in order to comprehend the need for its preservation and protection and the importance of the promotion of sustainable tourism practices as the only way to do it. They could witness some examples of good practices in doing so.

We began the day with a presentation about the plastic problem, the unsustainable practices of plastic waste management and the consequences of it all for the environment as well as for people. What can be done about it was also discussed and some solutions to reduce the negative impacts were analysed. The students gave their opinions on whether banning the use of plastic completely and plastic-free Europe was possible. The videos were made of the interviews. The following step of the event was the workshop in which the students were divided into groups and shown how to upcycle single-use plastic bags by crocheting them into key chains. The next event was another presentation about metal recycling where students upcycled small metal pieces into necklaces and bracelets and other decorative objects. And lastly, the group had an activity evaluation to check their progress. Also, there was an optional guided tour of Varazdin Cemetery.
