Steps for Addressing Suspected Generative AI Tool Usage
Identify Potential AI Usage- While reading students’ assignments, simply be observant for characteristics that may suggest potential use of generative AI tools. Typically, you may notice uniform formatting, lack of depth in written content, or a style that is inconsistent with the other work of the same student.
Initial Review – If you suspect a student of using AI, review the work thoroughly. Look for specific signs of generative AI such as unexplained content complexity, generic or repetitive phrasing, or information that does not make sense for the given task. Please remember that while there are AI detection tools, they are still not foolproof. Therefore, while they can be used to find similarities between a student’s work and generative AI, they should not be utilized as a standalone tool for confirming AI use.
Reach out to AQ Office – Contact the AQ Office and share a copy of the suspected student’s work. We will review the work and recommend one of the following courses of action.
Meeting between instructor and student to discuss your findings and to provide them with an opportunity to explain their work. This may result in the following:
Provide opportunity to resubmit assignment with the proper citations
Provide alternate assessment (e.g., oral task) to better evaluate student’s independent understanding of content
Meeting between AQ Director and student which may result in the following:
Provide opportunity to resubmit assignment with the proper citations
Provide alternate assessment (e.g., oral task) to better evaluate student’s independent understanding of content
Complete removal from AQ course without the reimbursement of course fees
Document Findings – Be sure to keep detailed records of your observations, findings, and interactions with the student to support any actions taken.
