Timely Feedback
Course surveys demonstrate that students appreciate timely feedback from their instructors. It is important for students to know how they are doing throughout the entirety of the course. Students should not come to the end of the course and be surprised by their final grade because they have not received marks or feedback from tasks throughout.
Prior to the due date of an assignment, all grades and feedback for previous assignments should be submitted. This allows the student to gauge their understanding of the course materials and seek clarification prior to beginning a subsequent task.
Constructive Feedback
Course surveys indicate students are appreciative of constructive feedback. When reading instructor feedback, students are most interested in learning about areas of future growth for their assignments.
While it may be tempting to use the feedback section to copy and paste wonderings to the entire class, this is not recognized as the most effective use of the feedback feature. Comments on assignments should be personalized specifically to the student and their assignment. Feedback should provide suggestions on how this specific student could improve upon their work.
Clear Expectations
Assessment should be as transparent as possible. One of the best ways to ensure effective feedback is through the use of rubrics. Allowing students access to assessment criteria means they will understand exactly what is expected of them in their task. This way, when feedback is given, students will be able to recognize the areas in which improvements can be made. Utilizing rubrics also ensures that instructors are consistently grading across assignments. The AQ office is working to ensure ALL courses have rubrics attached.
Rubrics should appear in the Assignment Dropbox where students will submit the assignment. If you find that your course is missing a rubric when you are grading assignments, please notify the AQ office so that we can make a note of the required update.
