When should I have a student resubmit an assignment?
Students are required to achieve a 70% in the course overall. In order to pass the course, they must have completed ALL course components (tasks, assignments etc.). We have had situations in the past where students think that because they have already achieved a 70% by the midpoint of the course, that they do not have to complete the rest of the course tasks. This is not the case! ALL tasks MUST be completed or students will receive an INCOMPLETE.
While students are required to achieve 70% to pass the course, they are NOT required to receive a 70% on each and every assignment. As an instructor, you are still able to mark assignments worth less than 70%.
With that said, we do not want to see students failing their assignments. If you are marking a student's assignment and notice that they have not grasped the content and will fail the task (e.g., less than 50%), instead of marking the assignment as is, simply return it to the student. Provide them with explicit feedback explaining what they can do to increase their mark on the task and offer to grade it once they have made the changes. This gives students the opportunity to learn from the feedback provided and work towards an assignment that is more representative of their understanding.
All assignment dropboxes should be set to allow multiple resubmissions, if a student is not able to resubmit another time, please check the assignment dropbox settings to ensure it has been set up properly. If in doubt, you can contact the AQ office.
