This unit of work is for L1 and L2 students. The L1 students are fluent in the Cook Islands Maori language as for the L2 students their first language is English. There are 15 students in this class, 9 fluent CI Maori language and 6 are English speakers.
The L1 students speak CI Maori language when they were born and at home, school and the community. They are very confident in speaking, understanding and writing in the Cook Islands Maori language.
The L2 students are Cook Islands students who were born in the Cook Islands and have went to school but however they moved to NZ when they were still in the Primary level at Year 5 class. These students continued school in NZ from Year 6 up to Year 10 then they came back to the Cook Islands. In NZ they speak English at home and school. However, at home CI Maori language is spoken so they are hearing Maori language at home but they don’t speak it, they give their reply to their parents in English. They would understand some simple Maori language but will not reply in Maori.
Therefore, this unit of work will reflect an achievement objective, learning outcomes, daily teaching and learning activities and assessments based on conversational Interaction skills that is taught in Year 11 NCEA Level 1 students. At Year 11 the curriculum level used Cook Islands Maori is Level 6. The daily teaching lessons are connected to the Learning Outcomes and each LO will be assessed at the end of teaching each learning outcome.
The learning activities for L2 will be simple and they will be learning the structure of the language and the sound of the words using phonics in simple sentences.
In the teaching and learning experiences the students will be taught in ability groups of L1 and L2 languages and there learning activities will be different. Both groups will be learning the following skills:
· Mouanga o te ‘o’ e te ‘a’
· Intransitive e te Transitive
· Locative nouns
There are 2 types of assessment for this unit of work and they are the Formative and Summative assessment. The formative assessment will be done during or at the end of teaching each learning outcomes. There is also the Summative at the end of teaching this unit that will sum up all the Learning Outcome in order to achieve the achievement objective. The summative assessment will be a recorded oral interaction between pairs, or a small group. Both formative and summative assessment of this unit is a recorded oral interaction. The length or minute of the recorded assessment for L1 and L2 is different, L1 students is required 2minutes conversational interaction and L2 students is required 1minute.
